Spare tire

I check my dually spare before leaving home for a camping trip.The 5ver spares are checked before each trip along with the truck tires and 5ver tires.

Due to past problems with st tires failing randomly I mounted both spares on top of the 5ver rear bumper with an aluminum rack I made for easier access.Both spares have tire covers and are positioned with the valve stems on the bottom facing out to add air when needed without having to take the covers off. Our 5ver now rides on XPS Ribs.

I will gladly lend a 235/80R/16 spare tire/wheel assembly or give a loose spare trailer tire (kept in the dually bed) to another camper in distress if needed. I keep a 6 gallon capacity pancake electric compressor and generator in the front compartment with 50 feet of air hose for tire problems... been there done that too many times. I'll help any camper who needs assistance changing tires on tv or camper.

We check our spare tire pressure before any trip, piece of mine I guess.

I check the spare before we head south and again before we head north. I also take it down and unbolt it once a year as if I had to change it. Found out the hard way the bolts holding it to the holder were rusted tight. Two bolts took an hour of sweat beside I75 north of Atlanta,Ga. to get the tire off.. Never again. Checks all done in the driveway. I would suggest strongly that if you have never changed a tire to do a test change at least once.
We had called roadside assistance and in the two hours beside the road they hadn't got there yet and were cancelled.

I towed back from FL to IL one year and did not kick the tires before I left. The following fall when dragging the fifth wheel out of the pole barn for winter travels, I noticed the spare was completely flat. I took it into the tire center and nothing was wrong except it needed to be aired up.

The barn cat would not fess up.

Check the spare maybe once a year HOWEVER I do have a 130# compressor & an inverter capable of running it. Plan B is get the genny out to run it.

A compressor is a great thing to have onboard. Particularly good at starting stubborn fires.

or after 2 years with external TPMS units.
Just have to install them properly.

As previously stated - I'll just plug my pancake genny into my generator and inflate spare if I have too....I hope I never need to use it....actually, It's a "brand new" - 6 yr old China Bomb.....I'd better get another XPS RIB.

I check the spare tire on the fiver and on the truck. I learned the hard way, well almost, when a 1 yr old valve stem failed on the truck's rear axle while towing and the spare tire only had about 40 psi. Fortunately the event happened at a truck stop and I quickly added air. Now I make it a point to check both spares.

I check to see if it's still there after an unfortunate "happening" on an overpass in St. Louis. :S
