1999 F53 chassis, no brake lights or hazard flashers

Hello all, just finished a trip in my 99 F53 Motor Home. Had some trailer wiring to update (new plug) and in the process of testing the lights on the tow I discovered I have no brake lights. Turn signals and running lights are all fine. No 4 way flashers either.

The multi function seems to be working, when I try to engage the flashers it DOES override the turn signals as it is supposed to. My understanding is that the turn signals and the hazard signals use the same flasher relay, correct?

I believe my pedal mounted brake switch is working as it kicks the CC off with just a touch of my foot. I've read lots of posts but most deal with the loss of brake lights AND turn signals and is usually a multi function switch problem.

I read a post on another forum that someone had gotten info from Ford that there is a flasher relay as part of a fuse but I can't locate anything in my manual. DOes anyone know if there IS a separate flasher relay somewhere for the hazards only?
Thanks to all who can respond. Darwin
  • My 99 SouthWind had 2 flashers, one at the floor under the brake pedal at the firewall. then I found out I had a problem with theTurn sig switch, had it replaced and no more problems.

My 97 has 2 flashers. One lives under the dash and works with the turn signals. The other lives on the floor directly behind the brake pedal and works with the 4 way flashers. As far as the brake lights?????Brake light switch????bulbs good????Good luck.
  • Scott,

the wiring from the plug isn't connected to anything. WHen I looked at it the wire connectors and screws to the terminals were corroded so I simply put a new set of terminals. They cannot affect the coach light operation when not connected.

I do not know if the brake lights/hazards were working, I tool the coach out of storage last month but frankly did not check the lights as they were working when put away (as far as I know)

FoMoCo says there is only one flasher relay on a 99 F53. All fuses seems to be good, checked twice.

No separate set of fuses for trailer plug.

Multi Function switch is the turn signal stalk, everything (brake lights, flashers, turn signals) runs through there. This way, the flashers override the turn signals and brake lights when operated.

    meporsche,
Well, I hate to say this but, I'm just a tad confused too but, on a different detail. Let me ask you, did all the brake lights, turn signals, and four way flashers work correctly prior to the trip? What was the need to change the plug? The only reason I ask these it because I'm trying to help lead up to what may be the cause of your issue.

If all was well before the trip or, at least before the plug change (even though you say the plug change is irrelevant) then don't you think that:

    1. It's possible you did something wrong in the wiring of the plug?
    2. In checking the functions of each pin on/in the plug, AFTER the plug change, did, at any time, the brake lights/turn signals/flashers work?

Now, on a second note, If I recall on most cars/trucks/motorhomes etc. there are TWO flashers. One for the turn signals and one for the four way flashers. At least, again if I recall, on our last coach, a '99 Fleetwood Bounder 34V with the F-53 and V-10, it had two flashers. Also, at least in our Bounder anyways, there are a group of fuses, just under the tilt-able dash. That is, you literally can lift up the half-moon dash and it has a prop that you put down, to hold it up, like the hoods on real old cars (for those of you that can remember waaaaaaaay back that far).

Then, down in that maze of looms and wiring, is a block of fuses. The ones for the turn signals and other lighting reside there.

So, at this point, I'm assuming you've hunted for and found, where your turn signal fuses are and, have checked them for operation.

One more thing. On many, if not all, Freightliner chassis coaches, there is a completely separate set of fuses, for the trailer plug that has nothing to do with the coach tail lights. Now, does your coach have a separate set of fuses for your trailer plug? Well, not a clue. I'm by far, no expert so I can't say if it does or not.

May I ask one more question. Maybe I'm clueless but, what is the "Multi-function" switch you're speaking of?

  • My first thought was a grounding issue. My 2003 Ford Ranger uses a single flasher unit for turn signal and hazards however there are two circuits in that unit. In my case the turn signals would flash once and stop but hazards worked. Once I replaced the unit both worked. So I would not eliminate that component based on it working for turn signals and not hazards. That does not account for the brake lights. If they both were working pre plug change, I would go with my initial thought that it is ground related. That when you changed the plug a ground was disturbed.

  • Sorry, what I did to replace the plug is irrelevant. I came to notice I had no brake lights when I was making sure I wired the plug correctly. The Motor Home has no brake lights or hazard flashers. All fuses seem to be good, flasher works for the turn signals and I have since learned that there is a single flasher for the turn signals and hazards.

I'm confused too. Is the problem with the motorhome or trailer?
  • Sorry but your post is hard to follow. But, if it worked before and doesn't after your re-wire. I would suspect that. Did you try testing the plug wiring at the motorhome?
