2004, 2005, 2006 Bounder Owners Experiences w/ Your Rig

I am looking at buying my second M.H. I cannot buy new, so trying to find low milage good brand name unit. The 2002 Holiday Rambler gas Endevour I had was no good. Numerous problems in spite of good care and regular maintenance. I sold it and the tow for one package price and loved the sight of the tail lights going down the road with a new owner who had been informed of the problems we'd had. THey'd had a "fiver" and were longing for a M.H.

Anyway, I am now considering a 2005 Bounder 35E that is very clean and well kept in seemingly excellent condition for around $35K from a local dealer.

I am looking for those who are owners or past owners of 2004, 2005, 2006 Gasoline Bounders with the Vortec 8.1 liter, V8 engine, to tell me your experiences with this rolling home. Any tips on improvments (brakes, springs/suspension upgrades, roof, awnings, engine, coach, plumbing, electrical, you name it), engine or coach problems and solutions, maintenance solutions and or problems, maintenance suggestions peculiar to this particular M.H., how the chevy chassis/engine combo performs in various conditions, ie weather, winds in west Texas, up and down mountains east and west, any towing problems OR suggestions, what you tow and what tow bar used. etc. etc.

If the 2005 Bounder with big slide, model 35E was a "lemon" year then Please speak up

Thanks for your time and valuable information friends, Andy
  • Have the 2005 35E which we bought new. Love the floorplan. We have the small refrigerator with a pantry and storage instead of the washer/dryer. Have lived in it fulltime since we bought it. Has Atwood Level Legs and have replaced 3 of them. Also replaced the bedroom slide control card. No other problems. Ours in on a Ford chassis and have about 80,000 miles on it. Fulltimers since 1990 with two other Bounders, a 91 & 98 both on Fords.
  • I have a 2007 bounder 8.1 workhorse Allison 6 speed trans. been good a little under powered when towing and 6.5 mpg if money war no object would have diesel pusher but the bounder is good
  • I have a 2004 Bounder mine is a 36s I think the 35e is a better unit, mine is a Workhorse same chassie I have 70,000 miles runs great take it to Florida the past 4yrs no problems towing a Dodge Dekota through the mountains from Ohio to Florida got 6to7 MPG,everything in the unit works as it should .I put track bars on it I would recommend that new shocks ,they get old and new tires I like mine a lot!
I did away with the washing machine it was a waste like the extra space
  • My Bounder has been a great motorhome. I'm the original owner, and right after purchase had the traditional "punch" list of fit/trim items that the dealer took care of. 9 years and 31,000 miles later it's still running strong and drives real smooth. It has the 2nd generation Ford 2V 310hp V10 with 4 spd trans, which easily pulls my HHR. The F53 chassis went to the Ford 3V 362 hp V10 with 5 spd trans for the 2006 model year.

DW and I put about 3500 miles a year on it, mostly camping with RV clubs, holiday week-ends with Kids/Gkids out in VA Beach and a couple NASCAR races. I have it serviced and inspected every March, and every 3rd year do a light truck service on the chassis and service the generator. It gets washed about twice a year.

Bought a 60 month/60,000 mile Service Contract at the 3 year mark, right after the Ford powertrain warranty expired. Over the last 5 years, the service contract replaced the rear AC, one of the rear electric jacks, the 12v/120v converter/charger and all three batteries, and the cooling coil for the fridge. All I paid was the $200 deductable for each occurance.

We removed the original vinyl and carpet from the command chairs to the bedroom and replaced that with high grade tile, we replaced the original 27in front TV with a 32in Samsung HD TV, and I put a new set of 19.5 in Firestone tires on it in Jul 12. Only engine modification I made was a Banks Ram Air, mostly to replace the OEM air filter, which had a problem of getting wet when driving in downpours.

I would buy another Bounder tomorrow, if Fleetwood made the floorplan and options that DW and I want in our next motorhome. We have pretty much settled on a 2014 Tiffin Allegro 36LA, mainly because of options. Will probably be selling the Bounder later this year or early next year, so that we can have the Allegro to travel to GA in Mar 14 for the FMCA International Rally.
  • The fact that you have the VORTEC 8.1 means workhorse chassis..Make sure the brake recall has been done (call Workhorse)...if it has not been done, that wouldn't stop me from buying it...I would just line up a Workhorse shop to do that recall and get it done the first day you own it...once you get past this slight obstacle..no reservations.
  • I got a 08 Bounder 33ft (32W), Bounders are well built gas motorhome at low cost, the 8.1 will move it just fine, should also be able to tow up to 5000 lbs, mine has a Ford V-10 and does great, I tow a Jeep Wrangler, Bounders have dual pane windows and good interior, just find one that has been taken care of.

I to was looking for 05 Bounder and was not wanting to spend over $50,000 but the newer full body paints and upgraded interiors I decided on a 08, if you do go older than 06 make sure its the 8.1, the older Fords did not have the HP for a 36ft, the 06 and newer Fords have the HP and trans to get the job done.

$35,000 for a 05 Bounder 35E seems cheap, especially from a dealer, got to have issues or lots of miles, normal cost for that should be around $45,000+ good condition, check it out real good.
