2004 holiday rambler slides

I plan on picking up our new to us 2004 Holiday Rambler Vacationer 36, 2 slides on March 8th. I don't know yet if it has any manuals with it. It's at PPL in Houston and I'm in Missouri. I want to be as prepared coming home as possible. Can someone tell which kind of slide mechanisms that coach has? If it has a malfunction after I get it is it electric, hydraulic, can it be cranked in? I have watched some how to's on You Tube but since there are different types I hope I can find out what I will have on it. This will be our first experience with slides so I am being inquisitive so I can be prepared in case of emergency. I also respect the information I get here!
Thanks in advance!
  • Your slides are mechanical gear drive by electric motors. They MAY have interior locks to keep them closed tight when the coach is in motion.
To operate them manually requires you to access the motors from the basement compartment, and using a 3/4" ratchet wrench on each motor, slowly retract them. There is also a brake lever on each motor that must be flipped to allow you to manually retract them. It is a tedious process because you have to move from motor to motor to insure that the slide is retracting straight.
Make sure there are no obstructions, inside or out, when you operate your slides. Lubricate the rubber seals and make sure you have grease on the gears and you should have no problems. They also will operate better if the batteries are fully charged.
  • I have a 2004 Monaco La Palma 36DBD motorhome. I suspect it is like yours as mine actually has a HR insignia on my front cap.

The slides are electrical gear driven, Power Gear brand I think, and I have no idea how to hand crank them.

The only problem I had was with the bedroom slide...a gear broke off the drive motor shaft so it would go in and out in a jerking motion.

Replacing the gear cured the problem. The drive motor assembly is under the bed and enclosed in wood. Simple to get to once you remove the wood cover.

Other than that they are problem free. I haven't seen any posts about these slides not working so I wouldn't worry about them.

Also I don't use the locking bar that they give you to keep the slide from moving out while you are driving down the road. Mine don't creep out and if you put the bar in place and forget to remove it you will wreck the slideout.

I use white lithium grease on the gear tracks about once a year.

For your information the bedroom slide moves about twice as fast as the living room slide.

You need to find out if the transmission fluid has ever been changed on the Allison 1000 transmission if yours is a Workhorse chassis with the 8.1 gas engine.

Make sure the Actia digital readout on the dash is working correctly. It shows what gear you are in and a ton of other stuff. Lot's of problems with the LCD screen so make sure it is legible.

Keep us updated on how your trip goes to pick it up.
  • All good questions for PPL. Why not call and ask.
You might find replacement manuals hear.
