awning

My uncle has a 43 foot 2013 tiffen allegro with the full length motorized awning which extends straight out about 4 feet level and then tilts for the rest of the length. He can't use it in the rain because the flat portion fills up with water and does not drain. This is a nearly 500k model. Both the manufacturer and the awning company say this style awning is not designed to be used in rain but only as shade when the sun is shining. Neadless to say he's very upset. Do any similar owners have an answer to this problem? I have a 40 foot 5th wheel also 2013 model and we often camp together.

My carefree electric awning works fine. It's adjustable, sheds water in the rain and no issues.

I guess on a unit with a large campside slide engineering has yet to come up with a good solution for an awning that will clear the slide and shed water. Sort of a pain if you ask me. I mean what are you supposed to do every time it rains and all your stuff on your patio gets wet? Chairs, grill, bikes, and heaven forbid you have a radio or want to put lights on your awning.

I drink and drive all the time for over 40 years, NEVER had a problem
I play with guns all the time and never have a problem.
Just because you have had no problems does not mean you will not in the future. I make my living from repairing RV's. I probably replace at least 10 awnings a year from people that had them open and a sudden downpour hit them before they could get the awning up or down to shed the large amount of water that accumilates. It is amazing how fast that water accumilates in the awning and then causes a huge center bubble of water and once that happens, the water is so heavy, the only thing you can do is either slit the fabric or run away when the awning collapses. The one on my DP works fine in the rain. We cook under it watch the basement TV, even park the race car under it. It has worked well for many years. Never heard the story that they were for shade only and I have been using them for a long, long time......

Just because you have been using them does NOT mean you have read the Instructions for them:B The awning in question is NOT like the one you have. Go to this link to see what we are talking about. Doug

If he can afford the 500k for something with an awning that he doesn't like then he can afford to replace the awning with one he does like.

The problem is this, due to the design of the specific Tiffin Bus. there is no way to install any other awning than this type model. You have 2 choices---Carefree and Girard. Tiffin does not offer Girard. These are totally enclosed BOX awnings with no side mounted arms. Doug
  • If it's raining, I simply pull mine in most of the way. I will leave it extended just far enough for me to sit under if that's what I want to do. Otherwise I simply pull it in in the rain. BTW, hail will shred the awning in seconds....just sayin....Dennis

I believe that the point its that at that level one should not have to find something else that will work and I tend to agree. Of course that is a problem that I am very unlikely to encounter. :B

  • my feeling about all automatic awnings is they suck, you can not pitch them down, they are short,oh and the auto with wind sensor retracts when (i will leave that alone)if i was to buy a new unit and it has a auto awning the deal would cancel if they would not convert to manual.enough said!
  • Awnings are NOT meant to be used in rain. Some awnings you can lower or let down to shed excess water, but MOST are NOT to be used in rain. They are sun shades, NOT rain shades. Below is the warning for the Carefree awning your uncle has. The design of this special model awning is a 3 position awning. PRICE of the RV has no bearing on the safe parameters of using certain awnings. Doug

    AWNING POSITION AND RAIN
When properly installed, the robust design of the Paramount allows the awning to
function as a cover for slide-out rooms, even in inclement weather.
When there is rainy weather, retract the awning to the slide-out position to keep
    your room protected.
    CAUTION
THE CAREFREE DIRECT RESPONSE SYSTEM IS A PREMIERE ELECTRONIC AUTO-RETRACT
SYSTEM THAT PROVIDES PROTECTION AGAINST ADVERSE ELEMENTS; BUT, NO AUTORETRACT
SYSTEM IS A GUARANTEE AGAINST SEVERE OR DESTRUCTIVE WEATHER; THE
EFFECTS OF WIND AND RAIN ON AN AWNING ARE UNPREDICTABLE AND MAY CAUSE
SEVERE DAMAGE TO THE AWNING AND/OR VEHICLE. IF WIND OR EXTENDED PERIODS OF
RAIN ARE EXPECTED, RETRACT THE AWNING TO THE SLIDE-OUT COVER POSITION OR TO
THE FULLY CLOSED POSITION IF THE ROOM IS RETRACTED.
