CO2 Detector - 2003 Winnebago Journey

Need help removing the Detector (Costar), so I can either change the battery, or replace it. I can't turn it counter-clockwise by hand, like the cover says. Can I use a strap wrench without breaking anything?

It once every minute or so, and started when I pushed the test button. I became the second owner in 2010. Any help will be most welcome.

Thanks in advance, Doug Welch Milton, DE
  • In my Winnebago it was hard wired in. I had to remove two screws to remove cover from wall. I bought a new detector for around $60.00 my old one lasted 7 years. I installed it myself in about 3 minutes. Good Luck
  • Thanks folks, and thank you RV.net. I should have figured the pin was the answer. I saw it and tried to push on it! Didn't think to pull. Also knew MON-oxide means one not 2! And yes, the sticker says to replace by 2008, Only 6 years past due. lucky I didn't have a faulty furnace. Lesson learned, I better check the date on my smoke alarm. .....Doug

Mine lifts out of the holder, But the battery cover is on the front, SMOKE detector comes off the way you cite (Turn a bit)

ITEM, it does not turn far, only a couple degrees. it may be it's already in the "Unlocked" position and all you need do is remove it from the bracket.

The holes in the Detector are common "Key hole" shaped screw mounts,, very slight turn needed to release.
  • If it beeps every 30 to 60 seconds, with mine that means it needs to be replaced.

As Coyote74 mentioned, on mine there is a small plastic pin that has to be removed so it can be turned.

On mine there was a sticker that said it should be replaced after a date that was five years after it was built. It lasted just about five years before the internal sensor died.
  • Some have a small plastic pin you have to remove before turning!
  • Try pushing it in and turning it.
If it is the CO detector in your coach, I think that it is hard wired and does not have a battery. They need to be replaced according to the expiration date stamped on the case. Mine was stamped on the back side and had to be removed from the wall to read the expiration date.
If this is the smoke detector, than it probably has a battery.
  • You should not need a strap wrench. Also, it's a CO detector :)
    (C02 is carbon dioxide.)
