DutchStar A/C replacement help

Help.....lol

Looks like I need to replace the Front AC in my 2001 Dutch Star Diesel Pusher.

Ive narrowed it down to a Penguin II as I think it will fit my current ducting after a bunch of reading.

The rear AC is working great.

I have a 5 button Thermostat already.

Will the AC's with the CC2 board installed work ? Or will I need to buy a Penguin and then a board for my 5 button stat ?

Im a bit lost here. I can do the swap but just figuring out which A/C I need to buy etc.. has me 2nd guessing everything...

Help...lol
  • Well,
Talked to the folks at Newmar this morning and they seemed pretty sure as long as I went with the Penguin II's I would only need thier add on gasket.

They said with any other unit I would need to order the kit to modify the roof.

I decided to just order 2 new A/C's and the new thermostat. I ordered the high capacith for the front and the 13,500 for the rear. Ill sell the old working unit along with the extra board and 5 button thermostat to someone looking to convert.
  • You have a few things to work thru on a 2001 DSDP
    1. The NEW Penguin's have a different location for the DISCHARGE(Cold) outlet and may not align with the current hole in the roof of your Newmar. That means you have to modify the hole in the roof
    2. You have a 5 button and the NEW Penguin has a 10 button CCC2 board. The Boards are NOT compatible with a 5 button. When installing a NEW Penguin 2 you have to purchase a 10 to 5 button control board kit and install on the New Penguin for the 5 button to work.
    3. OR, you can replace BOTH Penguins and just purchase a 10 button CCC 2 and have the most up to date wall tstat system. I advise customers to do this if their existing AC/HP's are more than 10 years old. This is plug and play, no wiring modifications needed. Doug
  • It comes with the board you just need to set the dipswitches on the board same as on the old board for the therm to recognize it.

But this is for the original peguin . the 2 you will need to do per doug
  • My understanding is that the new AC units work as is with the new digital thermostat. To use your 5 button therm. you have to change the control board (100 bucks) If you do that when your other AC fails you would need another control board. (100 bucks). Or when the other AC fails buy the new digital thermostat to control both AC, put the new style control back in your converted new AC and resell your conversion control board to the next guy who has this problem. Or bite bullet and replace both now. Good luck, Dave
  • I've found that PPL Parts always has a good if not the best price on parts. They're pretty good at telling you what is compatible with your rear A/C unit and your thermostat. Give them a call.
