Onan 6300 Propane Generator

I have an Onan 6300 propane generator in a Serengeti MH. It has about 650 hours on the clock and has always been serviced annually and exercised monthly. However, now it will start OK and run for about 20 minutes and stop. It will do this either with a load or with no load. I have checked the oil level and it is full.
Does anyone have suggestions where to start check and does anyone know a shop that specializes in Onan propane generator service?
Thanks

A few years ago, Wolfe10 wrote a great message about oil in the propane contaminating the pressure regulator/"carburetor" at the genny. Try searching this topic to try to locate that information. I've got a copy saved somewhere if you can't find it. Bob_L

This is quite possibly the problem you are seeing. Oils and heavy ends remaining in liquid propane from refinery producers can cause carb/vaporizers to clog their small passages pretty quickly and the heat used to vaporize the LP tends to bake the deposits into a hard carbon like mess. Companies who operate forklifts on propane see this as their number one repair problem.

Propane that is stripped from natural gas is generally a lot cleaner, but we don't always know what we are buying and can see problems like you are experiencing as a result.
  • I was having a similar problem with my diesel gene and it turned out to be a broken belt that runs the water pump. The gene would run until it hit the over temp limit switch. I didn't even notice the belt had broke.
Replaced the belt & all was good.

Fuel filter, can do that kind of thing too. Only it should shut down faster if under load.

The ERROR CODE (refer to your manual for retrival of code) is helpful.

Also the outlet strainer (pick up strainer whatever it's called) inside the fuel tank is another... well.. fuel filter.

Propane generator, according to OP's post ;)

OP- Same results with a Full tank of propane? Is your regulator icy/cold when the genny quits? Any lines icy/very cold?

I have not checked to see if any of the lines are icy or very cold, but I will. Where would be the best location to check, close to the fuel tank or closer to the generator??
    Thanks

  • Low oil will shut one down like that. You say it is full but is your rig level? I would try adding a little bit more oil and see what happens.
