Replacing Kwikee steps

Has anyone replaced a 3-step set of automatic stairs with a 2-step? I recently damaged my steps because they did not retract. Prior to that I noticed they sometimes didn't extend fully, and I was thinking that by going from 3 steps to 2 I might not repeat my mishap. Any thoughts?
  • If your coach came with with the 3 step set up I would replace it with the same. I've had to replace the gear box on my 3-step unit twice and controller once. Did it myself, wasn't too difficult.

    Good luck & Safe Travels....

I agree, a 2 step might not go down as far making for a long step. JMO
  • All pivot points on these steps should be lubed at least every three months. If you don't do that you are asking for failure. Kwikee recommends their KwikLube. I have also heard that motorcycle chain lube works well. You want something that goes on wet then dries to a thick gel. Don't lose the spray straw as you need precise control of the spray. I have used the KwikLube on both our MHs and not had a failure....yet!
  • Is the motor damaged? I had the same failure, bent the steps badly. I used a floor jack to hold them up while taking them out and putting them back. Price around on the internet prices very a lot.
  • I could always tell when it was time to lube my 3 steps on my Mountain Aire. The step would not return fully. I carried a can of spray lithium grease and used it on all the moving parts. After a spraying they always worked great for a few more months.

I'm just back from the FMCA Great Lakes Rally and was in a seminar where that product was highly recommended. Apparently it's the shaft that runs from side to side that you lubricate with that product. He told us that if it had not been lubricated you can thoroughly spray with it with WD-40. The WD-40 was only to clean it. After that it should be lubricated with that particular lubricant.
  • Jay, I agree that you will change the geometry and that last step may be to much. Check with an online catalog to compare the measurements. Then check the mounting bolt pattern, it cam be a real pain to change the mounting bolts. As near as I can discern, mine are carriage bolts and the heads are covered by the stair tread. To relocate the bolts would take a lot of work.

I have learned that good maintenance will keep them working well. I drew up a schematic for making a set of indicator lights to check the step location but I haven't had time to fabricate and install. Personally I think that indicators should be a factory installation for every electric step.
