Slide gasket reattachment

The Gasket that runs around the frame of the slide opening had rusty little metal clips that held the gasket on. It began to fail and we removed all the metal track clips and rust and trying to figure out the best way to reattach rubber to frame that seals slide from elements. Anyone else run into this?

  • Thanks Dave, I was not sure silicone would provide enough adhesion to hold on as the slide repeatedly move in and out.
  • The ONLY correct repair is to replace the complete slide gasket. The new gasket comes with the metal clip installed. They do not sell the metal zipper clip by itself. NOTHING will adhere the existing gasket to the gasket frame edges. Only the metal clips will hold it in place. Doug

I had the same problem on one of my slides and did indeed replace all 3 of my slide seals.

My slide toppers needed replacing as well so I did them at the same time, as the toppers are in the way of putting the seal in place across the top. Not a fun job, but glad to have it done.
  • tk, did you replace the seals yourself or have it done? Do you know the method and material that was used?

I did it myself. I mainly just used my fingers to seat the new seals, but on a couple of sides there was not enough room for the seal AND my fingers so I used tools there to press the seal into place. Sorry, I don't remember exactly what I used - a wood chisel, maybe.

I just started at the bottom of one side of the slide and worked my way around. To better conform in the corners, Monaco had cut the blade, overlapped the edges and glued them together. I used Super Glue Gel for that. To make sure I got the right thing, I ordered directly from Monaco, but the part for mine was ED50470 - Deal, Double Bulb w/2" Blade. Your rig may take something different.
  • I had my full slide open metal grip rubber seal replaced with encapsulated rubber seal No. ZML-6705 (the metal gripper is sealed inside the rubber and not left open like the original seal) made by Clean Seal, Inc. (see Cleanseal.com). Research through the internet provided the answer for me for the open seal type construction problem. Plus the seal is a heavier rubber than the old spongy type.

Parkin Accessories provided the smaller amount of material which I needed - 50' minimum order of which 32' continuous length was used on my 21-22' slide.

Installation required removing the roller and laying it on the roof as well as removing the lift bars of the Carefree topper.

The original open metal grip rusted with the seal falling off twice in the first three years ownership from new rig purchase and even though sealed along the edges of the seal on the second installation.

The current encapsulated seal has been on since Dec., 2010.
  • I would try a good silicone first, not the cheap stuff and if that didn't work I would try something like flex shot!
