Travel from Ithica,NY to DC

Hello All, would US15 or I- 81 be better for travel from NY ( finger lakes area) to DC?
Distance is about 40 miles longer on 81 but the time differance is minimal ( according to google maps)...more curious about road conditions
  • Having just traveled to Cortland, NY from VA to Whitesville, NY and back to VA, both I-81 and US-15 have some construction. US-15 also goes through Williamsport, where the Little League World Series is going on, but also takes you past the Baltimore Beltway (I-695) and straight to I-270 to DC. I would go US-15.
  • Use Rte 15. MUCH less traffic and better roads.

From Williamsport to Sellinsgrove take I180. This is 4 lane rather than 2 lane over the mountain and through Lewisburg (Except for approx. 7 miles through Northumberland). Cross the River in Northumberland and you're back on Rte. 15.

You also will go through Gettysburg. Nice side trip to see the sights.
  • Been quite some time since I've been to that part of the state. When I was over there, I-81 was quite rough and US15 was much smoother. The interstate is limited access with no stop lights or signs while there are some on US15. I'd take 15 just for the smoother ride!!!
  • We take 15 quite often. We get on at Painted Post and take it to just north of Harrisburg where we take 22/322 east to I-81 North to I-83 South to 15 toward Gettysburg. There was a small area of construction about a month ago, but nothing too hard to handle.
  • I just came up 81 from DC today, and it was a real mess! I usually take 15, which is a pretty nice road, but was camping further east so decided on 81. Not sure I lost time overall, since I didn't have to travel west to 15, but it was definitely more frustrating.
  • One more for 15 -- we used to use it often on trips to Rochester and Syracuse -- good road and an easy drive - always fun to drive by the LLWS, and never had an issue with the crowd.

    BOL,
