- avantiExplorerAs for tools, I agree that it is very easy to go overboard. My compromise was to wait for one of those cheap "150 piece" mechanic's tool kits to go on sale at Sears (brand X, not "Craftsman)". They come in a nice plastic case and, since the tools are cheap, they don't weigh that much. Not the tools I would by for every-day use, but they will get you thorough an emergency.

You're not prepared for an emergency unless you have a roll of Duct Tape. ;)
That's 100% correct!!! duct tape always! - Traveling_PaExplorerThere is a handful of tools - screw drivers, wrench, and pliers in a slot on the driver's side door and a 2 by 10 by 16 inch plastic box of little tools, bulbs and fuzes. I have the original bottle jack and have all 5 tires rotated. And oh, a fire extinguisher on the fire wall by the passenger's feet. In 240,000 miles in our 2004 Sportsmobile/Sprinter 2500 I have never had a tire emergency nor has there been a reason to have a tow. I have probably spent a couple hundred miles in "limp home mode" (reduced power). Limp home permitted driving to repair facilities to replace 3 turbo resonators and 3 inter cooler hoses. I carry a card from Progressive with phone number offering free towing service. I've never had to use it or any other similar service so I don't know if it works or not. I hope to have some major paint and body work done soon so we will look good and can continue to enjoy traveling for another 5 or 10 years.
- kendall69ExplorerLets' put it this way....on my first trip may years ago I packed a garage model class C with nearly my entire garage full of tools. Compresor, boxes of evey electrucal terminal made, several types of tape, glues, boxes and boxes of sockets, wrenches, ( both metric and standard ) , severl types of jacks, case of oil, case of transmission fluid, flares, rags, jumper cables, flashlights galore, work lights, rope, electrical cable, cable ties, battery operated drills, battery operated impact wrenches, .......AN ON AND ON AND ON.
Several hundred pounds of tools and emetgency equipment.
Again this was a garage model capable of holding a golf cart that I filled with tools.
I got home afterthree weeks on the road and never used one thing I brought except maybe the flashlight.
Lesson learned. Now If I need something I buy it on the road of call Good Sam. - avantiExplorer

I totally understand what he was saying. My only point is that their choice to sponsor this site is an act of commerce, not philanthropy. Nothing wrong with that, of course.
I will say this though:
To their credit, there has never been any sign of censorship on this site, which is not always the case with business-run sites. - DavyddExplorerI think My Roadtrek is saying there wouldn't be a forum here to post in if Good Sam wasn't "serving enthusiasts of the open road" with this forum.
- mumkinExplorerI opted out of the mail for Good Sam (who owns this board, BTW, Avanti :B) and it was so efficient that I can't even get my membership card!!
But, back to the topic of this thread, I have two cell phones (one Verizon) and my CoachNet. And I'm one of those who hasn't had a spare for the last 4 years and won't have one with my new rig either. - avantiExplorer

Than you for posting this. Since your experience was totally opposite of mine, it caused me to poke around a bit. Sure enough, they have improved. Apparently GS's affiliation with Camping World combined with the vast amount of bad press on the net has caused them to throttle back their former tactics, which really were quite amazing (as a simple Web search will reveal). My experience is several years old, but back then none of their "opt out" mechanisms had any effect at all, even after I quit them over the issue. I quite literally had to contact the office of the president of the company to get it to stop--and I am no crusader against junk mail.
I am genuinely glad to hear that the situation has improved. I will lay off them in the future.
Also, you wouldn't be making a post here if it wasn't for Good Sam.
So, you are saying that they are a business with an advertising budget? Hardly relevant, eh? - My_RoadtrekExplorerI dont get any junk mail. I opted out of both Email, and snail mail. If you want to go after someone go after AARP, or some others that send out way more mail than Good Sam. Also, you wouldn't be making a post here if it wasn't for Good Sam.
Getting back to the thread, my post was about making sure that what ever service was being used, it offered RV towing. - avantiExplorer

Will Geico tow an RV? That is one of the most important Emergency service to have. Even AAA RV Plus will not tow in all states.
Good Sam ERS, or Coachnet are two of the best. They both have different levels of towing service, but both cover all family vehicles.
Good Sam is just a reseller for Allstate RV Motor Club. The service is actually managed by Allstate. Same service, same price. Go to the source and you will avoid all the disgusting junk mail that Good Sam is famous for.
