Would you buy an RV with slide outs again?

I am looking to buy a HR 32' class A RV from year 1997-1999.

Some have slideouts and some do not. I am leery of their reliability and possibility of leakage. The whole concept of slideouts that require an awning to prevent leaks is un-nerving. Seems there should be a better way. I'm wonder about those who have used slideouts for many years and their opinion.

For a RV of this age, would you recommend slideouts?
Has anyone used slideouts over a period of many years without leaks?

X2, going back would be like living in a hallway.

Our GeorgieBoy has two slides which was a big factor in our purchase. Have
full-timed for 8 years and never had a leak. Would never consider another
RV without slides!

It all really comes down (as most things here do) to how you use the RV. If you mostly go to wide open boondocking spaces, commercial campgrounds, etc. then slides are hard to beat.

If, like us, you mostly go to smaller COE campgrounds, State Parks, overnight stays in truck stops or Walmarts on the road, slides are much less attractive.

To each his own!

Yes yes yes. We upgraded a few months ago from our last C to an A with two slides. I don't care how much I have to maintain, lube, check, or work on them if at all. I wouldn't even consider no slides.

From one of the wise old hands on the Wanderlodge site;

"Slides are like NYC real estate, except they do not appreciate.

The average 40' coach is 320 square feet. Add a couple slides that are 15x2 and you get 380 square feet for and additional 60K or so. If $1000 a square foot plus maintenance meets your expectations, by all means, step to the table."

We are of the no slide people. Our 30 foot 2000 MH is perfectly fine for the 2 of us, the 3 dogs (1 Lab/husky cross, 1 Australian Shepard, and 1 Australian Cattle Dog) and 1 cat. Cat doesn't want outside and dogs are tied up and we are in lawn chairs most of the time. When it rains or is too windy, DH is in the captain chair, I am at the dinette, cat is on the bed, 2 dogs under the dinette and one at DH's feet.

I hope we can find a slideless MH when we have to trade.

not that I am actually gonna read all this, but....

Slideouts started to being in most motorhomes in about 1999, 14 years ago.
Like anything new, there were some problems, some people got burned, and many, either the "burnies" or the "I don't want nuttin newies" said "slides are a problem waiting to happen."

Well. MH #1, a 1999, had a slide.
MH #2 has four slides.

No way, no how, would I ever go back. MH #2 is just plain huge. 12' wide inside, lots of room for us and for our dogs. Never a slide problem, and if there was I'd rather fix it than go back to an 8 foot coach.

Slides rock.

Think your wrong here. There are some mighty expensive coaches (like your friend's Prevost) that didn't come with slides.

Not once....yes correct, not even one time have I met or known a person that has a problem/issue/leak with their slide.

Then you need to get out more often. PLENTY of slide problem stories right here on this forum.

Not once....yes correct, not even one time have I met or known a person that has a problem/issue/leak with their slide. On the other hand I DO have a good friend that has a '94 Prevost, obviously with no slides that loves their bus but HATES that they don't have slides. Make of it what you will.

I likely will buy another one with slides but it sure won't be A Newmar product, got to be something better built than the one I got, bloody rattles for a unit that only has 140k on it and the slide seals have been changed twice. Slides do give a lot more room but as I said I will likely be buying a Bus next time around, nothing made of plastic and fiber glass junk.

That's precisely why we picked our current rig.

Northmeck, I have to ask, were you at the North Little Rock KOA at the end of June? I could swear a unit like yours pulled in next to us. Nice unit by the way.

To all the other posters... I never thought about how useable the inside would be with slides in. I have not opened them during a quick evening stop if I'm by myself. There is one kitchen cabinet that I can only open one side (buffet upper cabinet) and when the bedroom slides are in, the end of the bed closes against the dresser drawers and I would have to climb over the bed to the closet.

When I have made those quick nightly stops by myself, I just put out the electric bedroom slide (all the others are hydraulic). So, no big deal if the slides are in.
