DirecTv Trav'ler dish setup between stick house and MH

I'm getting a DirecTv Trav'ler dish installed on my MH and will be using my receivers (HR44 Genie and Genie client) between the house and MH. I was looking at the Trav'ler manual online where it mentions having to go through the setup menu, satellite setup each time the receiver is moved from the house to the MH. Is this always necessary? And then when moving the receiver back into the stick house, will I have to run through the satellite setup again? If so, I need to make sure I know what my original house setup is. Can I just go through the satellite setup at home without changing any setting so I can see its current settings?

Are there any setup issues with the Genie clients between house and MH?

Thanks for your help. I hope this isn't more trouble than it's worth!

First a bit of advice: IF you do not already have a DirecTV account, set up an RV account, do not bother telling Direc you will be using it at home.. Works better that way as you qualify for Distant Network Service (LA or NYC network stations no matter where you are parked).

If you had read the OP's post you would have seen that he already has a DirecTV account so this is useless advice.

Now: to your question: Yes, you need to run through the menu every set up. However once you have done it 2 or 3 times it will become automatic and you it only takes a mintute or so.

As the OP has already been told; he doesn't need to do the setup if his home has the SWM3 LNB pictured by Bill. Your advice is incorrect.

if the Traveler is a dome... It will not get DirecHDTV by the way. NOT all DirecTV receivers have "Round Dish" as an option, Travler is a "Round Dish" in DTV terms.

This is totally incorrect; the Trav'ler is not a dome and it is not a Round Dish. The new Trav'lers use the SWM3 selection on the menu and they do very much get HD reception.

    Yeah, I noticed that.

And I checked my LNB and it has the green label as Bill mentioned so I'll be good to go!

    Thanks for everyone's help!

If your dish at home is the same as the one on your RV, the Genie will not know that it has been moved and will power up just fine. If not the same, you will have to run setup again. No big deal, but MAKE ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that you select the proper dish. There are a lot of combinations to choose from and several are quite similar.

X2. We have the same dish on the house as we use in the RV. We just plug the Genie in. It does not need to be reprogrammed each time if you have the same dish.
  • I'll have to get the ladder out tomorrow and check the LNB. I'd almost bet they will be the same.
    Thanks for the help!
  • Go outside and look at the antenna on your roof. If it's high up you might take some binoculars. You are looking for not only what the LNB looks like but to see if there is a green square label on the housing near the base.

If your home dish looks like this then no setup change is required. If it does not then a change will be required but takes less than 5 minutes.

  • Your receiver needs to be told what kind of dish it is connected to. Since it is a SWM-only receiver that answers one of the two questions in the setup menu--the question that asks for "switch type." Your new Trav'ler will, no doubt, be the current SWM model. So all you have to do is set the antenna type and that will depend on what you have at home. Bill Adams will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the SWM Trav'ler uses a SWM3 LNB so that would be the correct setting for use in your MH.

At home you could have any of a couple of dishes but you can look at the settings and write them down before you change anything. Just go into Menu/Settings and Help/Settings/Satellite settings. You will have to push the "-" (the dash) button to enter the satellite settings screens. Once you get in you will see the two drop-downs for antenna type and switch type. The switch type will be grayed out because the HR44 is SWM-only. If your home dish is also a SWM3 then you would not have to go through the settings when you moved the receiver since it would be the same in both locations.
  • More than likely yes. It is not a big deal, menu, setup and follow the directions. Have an installer show you how to do it if necessary.
