Simple! You need to read the install directions carefully:
When installing the FREE version of Malwarebytes(MB), you need to un-check "Enable free trial of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium". If you don't, you'll enable the paid version which will only work for a limited time until you buy a license. - camperpaulExplorerThere are two "versions".
The free version is FREE.
The "pro" version is $25.
When installing ANY software, watch out for the check-boxes. - billyboyExplorerhow come they keep telling me my free trial is over and I have to pay 24.95
- Bill_SatelliteExplorer IINope, Malwarebytes is still free.
Free Malwarebytes - billyboyExplorer

it now appears to cost 25.00 to get it
We use the free stuff here namely ADVANCED SYSTEM CARE and AVG... AVG runs in the back ground and tells you when things happens it doesn't like.
I also run MALWAREBYTES ANTI-MALWARE which is also FREE...
Works good here for US...

Roy Ken - rhingstExplorerOur old Dell desktop was totally screwed up so I called Dell support. My 5 year support had expired but they offered to clean up the PC for $179. this was after they had run System Mechanic by Iolo but I had remembered seeing it at Walmart for $20 so I told them 'no thanks' and hung up.
I then went to Walmart and bought System Mechanic, installed it, ran it and it cleaned up all kind of crap. Now I run it about every month or so and everything is fine. - bcsdguyExplorer

Has Chromebook gone from an internet only machine to a usable device? Does Chromebook no longer rely on internet for its OS? And it's still very usable if you don't have internet access? I've not kept up with Chromebook and don't know.
Or, you could get a chrome book and not need any of the aforementioned stuff. I have just about quit using my laptop completely as I have found the chrome book does pretty much all I do on a daily basis. Just sayin'.
The chromebook is designed for internet use and email but you can work offline in google docs or other offline apps. Most things people do are online activities and in that way it is pretty much equal. The fact that it uses apps and no downloaded programs keeps it virus free. There are still things I have to do on my laptop but not much. You can use microsoft office suite online and I do save all my documents in word. The chromebook is extremely fast loading and switching webpages. I have a 65gig flash drive "stubby" that is my "hard drive" and it has hdmi port and sd card port along with two 3.o usb ports. It's not everybody's answer but it works for me.:) - 1492ModeratorIMO, you don't need to pay for security or system maintenance software. I can get top rated paid AV software from my employer for my personal systems for Free. But use all Free security apps instead.
At minimum, I'd recommend a highly rated Free AV program + Malwarebytes Free + CCleaner Free + Zemana AntiLogger Free. Of all these, the only one program I'd consider paying for is Malwarebytes Premium, which includes real-time scanning. In fact, I personally run more security apps, some custom to add a layered approach.
If you're wondering about Zemana, its a keyboard encryption and memory capture prevention app. Why? Simply look at what the recent credit card breaches at Target, Home Depot, Michaels, Goodwill, etc all had in common? Apparently, the use of keylogging/memory capture Malware. Though not foolproof, as it needs to load ahead of the keylogger to be effective. Especially, important if you are using a computer or web based password manager app. Take my word on this one, as I was able to breach both in tests using readily available keylogger/memory capture apps. The only way to stop it was by use of a anti-keylogger/capture app.
Of course, this assumes your system is clean to begin with? Especially, if any type of keylogger Trojan or rootkit is embedded in your system. Which in themselves, are notoriously difficult to detect even by top rate AV software. None of my AV software was able to do so, even though I had installed the keylogger. The only one that did? Malwarebytes Free. - 5thwheeleroldmaExplorerThanks all. I knew some of this stuff, but had forgotten it. Need to make myself a computer "how to" file. In defense of FrankShore, I have copied his whole piece into my "how to" file. I did uninstall all Java and Adobe files. Some of it I probably don't know how to do. Think the most valuable thing I did was go to All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Cleanup and did a cleanup. Knew in the past to do this but had forgotten it.
- wildtoadExplorer IIAgree on the use of Advanced System Care. I've used it for years and it works well. If you download it, choose the manual install option and uncheck the other product install options.
