What replaces the BOMB in newer RVs?

We upgraded our entire entertainment system last year and have HD TVs and DirecTV genie and a second receiver in the BR. Everything works with HDMI cables only. This upgrade resulted in having to trash the BOMB, as it doesn't handle HDMI.

So the new system works great. We love it. However, on those few occasions I might want to watch cable or OTA, I can't do it without rewiring things in my AV cabinet.

How do manufacturers handle this today?

You should not have trashed the BOMB.. It still routes Cable and OTA, can route one or two other things too

Instead route a PAIR of HDMI and route one to HDMI-1 (Sat TV) and the other to HDMI-2 (Blu Ray) and let the TV do the switching for you.
  • Cable and OTA are going to use the same "TV" input via the same coax so an A/B switch is still required unless you have a TV with 2 coax inputs.
  • The BOMB has been replaced by TVs which can switch between multiple sources of programming and HDMI splitters. All TVs can be wired to receive programming from multiple sources whether it be Blu-ray or Satellite (via HDMI) or over the air TV (via coax), It only gets a little tricky when you want separate satellite programming on different TVs.

Retrofitting older coaches can be simplified by using HDMI over CAT6 wiring or wireless adapters.
  • my RV doesn't have the BOMB
although..there is a family member whose RV does have it
it has been bypassed by the HDMI on the hdtv ,,bluray..etc..

totally missed the acronym it went right pass me

maybe b.o.m.b would have caught my attention..Maybe
  • Box Of Many Buttons. I guess those of us in our dotage don't get using short hand. I only have cable, batwing and HDMI for the BluRay. Oh well, I guess I should talk to the SIL and find out about all this need for bringing home with me to view the wonders of our country.

Since you don't need the BOMB any longer, you still need an A/B switch for Cable and OTA. Just put that where the BOMB used to be and you will still be able to select the input you want to send to the TV's.
I recommend the Radio Shack High Isolation A/B switch but any good high quality switch will work.

    BOMB ?

Box of many buttons. Mr. Wizard should have known that. :-)
  • I replaced all my TVs with HD screens and sat boxes , added Blue Ray DVD, SENSAR OTA Amp. I already had a Panasonic Surround Sound amp that had a optical sound input and I made sure the new TV had an optical sound out. I ran HDMI from all devices to the front tv. The Sensar is coax to the OTA input. So i use the tv remote to change inputs but never have to change the amp input. Simple enough and a big improvement. I never use park cable but if I did I would add an AB switch to split the antenna. I use Directv and a tripod for sat.

On edit, you need to make sure your tv has plenty of HDMI Inputs. I do the same at home.
  • Usually the cable input is connected to the antenna preamp. When it is OFF the outside cable jack is connected to the tuner input on the tv. When you turn on the antenna amp it connects the antenna to the tuner input.
You would just have to switch your TV input to tuner and that is it. That is how ours is set up.
