Forum Discussion
- westernrvparkowExplorerI thought this thread was closed, just looking at the title. If the OP wants to get a few more opinions, they should modify the subject line so it doesn't appear this thread is closed.
What caused the shift to closing help wanted threads to posting was the fact that many people chimed in saying how it was a bad position. People would say this job or that job was bad because why would anyone clean toilets for money, or why would anyone work for that many hours a week when they were retired Or the pay is too low. Or reviews look like that park is ugly. Or why would anyone workamp in Texas in the summer. It discouraged any employer from posting a job, and with no jobs posted there isn't really a need for a Workamping Forum as a place for employers to post positions.
As a thought, it would be nice if instead of just saying closed, the forum could come up with better wording. Even "help wanted threads are not open for discussion" would be better than "closed". Even better would be if there was a way that employers could edit the thread with a "Position Filled" response. Finally, I think the post should just disappear after a period of time (say 30 days) unless the employer contacts the moderator and instructs them to extend the posting (maybe with a date and "still available" in the subject line). This forum has the potential to be beneficial to both employers and perspective employees, but it sure wasn't good for either with all the negative posts generated for each job listing. - 4X4DodgerExplorer II

I'm with Dianne on the needless negativity which lacks specificity, and really adds nothing to the discussion. Specific negative comments however can serve multiple purposes and can be quite useful. Two purposes that come immediately to mind: First, warn off or prevent another from the same experience. Second possibly improve matters by causing an adjustment in working conditions or management behavior.
Not all comments in here were negative either. Complimentary notes I'm sure were greatly appreciated by which ever establishment was being mentioned and serve well for us who may be looking in the area for possibilities.
I'm really not a fan of the shotgun corrective action, preferring specific consequences for specific actions, but I do understand the magnitude of the job Dianne has. Perhaps this can be revisited at a later date?
Regardless of the magnatude of the job any moderator may have it is their duty to MODERATE. Not just delete. It is not a post of censorship it is meant to keep people following the rules. Like you I believe that negative comments are often as valuable if not more so than the Rah Rah cheerleading that passes too often for positive comments and like you I too would appreciate more specifics.
Negative comments that point to the financial aspects of a post I believe are very important as some in fact many may not consider the offer in those terms and seeing it from a different perspective is hopefully enlightening, it will also as you point out possibly increase the quality of offers posted here.
If all you are going to allow here is happy people dancing to the music and all saying lovely things about one another then this site will lose all it's worth in a very short time. Dissent and disagreement are at the HEART of any good conversation that has as it's intention the pursuit of the truth. - TotendatrailerExplorerGood to know. As a fulltimer and summer Workamper I figured when it said "closed" the job was filled. Now we just won't know for sure. I do see the same negativity on the workamping Facebook groups though so I do understand.

The reason posts are closed here is because there are too many people who overvalue their 2 cents. Someone makes a post offering a site for Y hours, guaranteed someone will pipe in right away with their calculator in hand saying that, since their site costs X amount on their website and they want Y hours, they're only "paying" the person Z dollars/hour instead of just minding their own business and letting someone else decide whether they want to take the offer or not.
It discourages people from offering up jobs here, which undermines the purpose of this forum. - 4X4DodgerExplorer III think the moderators despite their diligence and the good service they perform often jump to quickly to delete things. I am not sure what is meant in this context by "Negativity" but I would like to see deletions reserved for Foul Language, Name Calling, Racial, Gender or other slurs etc...but simply being negative? Is that really a reason to delete?
For my part I read this about once a week. I havnt noticed any negativity beyond people expressing their opinions about this job or that job or company. Nothing to get the delete pen out for. - shenandoahvalleExplorerI posted some info about VA state parks, it's closed and it's still readable. It was posted for information purposes only and it's not really a discussion topic. I agree with Dutchman Sport, once it's run it's course it should be closed. I think the MODS on here do a pretty good job.
- DutchmenSportExplorerI usually skip over the Workcamping Forum, but every now and then one gets my attention. I would expect these forums to be closed rather quickly though. I have not noticed the negativity, maybe because those posts get deleted before I get to them, or I just simply don't check these forms... whatever.
But, I would think, once the form has run it's course, I would expect it to be closed. Kind of like a posting for a job in the classified ads in the local newspaper, today the job is available. If you wait till tomorrow to enquire, the job is probably filled. Should the news paper continue to run the ad over and over? Forums are not ads, but once the information is "out there", at least the entire thread is not deleted. The information still exists, as does the contact information. At that point, I would expect anyone interested in the position to contact the "employeer" for more information.
Maybe I'm just a bit old fashioned, but I don't see any sense in keeping them open forever. Once closed, they are still readable. Anyone still interested can always make contact themselves? Is that so bad? - Dog_FolksExplorerOn 01-13-15 The moderator of this forum said:
"MODERATOR NOTE:
I am appalled at the negativity from some members regarding job postings on this forum. Last night I spent a lot of time deleting and cleaning up threads.
From this point on, I am asking those posting positions to provide contact information. Then I am going to close the thread.
For those interested in a position, contact the OP.
I do not expect those who insist on being negative to stop...perhaps, tho, this will cut back some of the hard feelings. I have been moderating this forum for over a decade and this problem is the worst it has ever been. I am ashamed over this behavior."
