How many hours are a lot for an Onan 4k?

We have been looking to get a larger, but probably older 31 ft Class C to replace our current 25 footer. I found a 2007 Jamboree GT that fit the bill, but was really concerned about the generator hours..........2000!

I see people advertising 2 or 3 hundred, but wow, 2000 is a bunch. He said it runs great. Just need some thoughts on this from those in the know that have had a lot of hours on one. We have had two Onan's, but both had low hours including our current one with only 48 on it.
  • I'd be more worried if it had 20 or 200 hours. Onan gennies love to run and are happiest when being utilized, many issues are from lack of use and not following maintenance protocols. As long as it has been properly serviced I wouldn't fret, and with only 48 hours on your current Onan it doesn't appear that it will see any heavy use.

We have nearly 800 hours of Onan run-time on our 6 year old rig as we often camp without hookups in extreme temps where running the AC or a couple of portable heaters is required, Onan just purrs along powering our entire rig as if plugged into shore power. As suggested above, run it under significant load for an hour or two as that should indicate one way or another to it's functionality.
  • For the engine on the 4000 MicroQuiet, I also think 2000 is a lot of hours, even with good maintenance, for a splash lubricated four-stroke with no oil filtration. Similar engines in pump and commercial mower applications go 500 to 2000 hours, but a well cared for engine might go a lot more than 5000.

The generator engine is not built the same as a consumer mower engine, with 50 to 200 hour life expectancy. The generator engine uses better materials, but life still depends on keeping up with oil changes and air filter changes.
  • I have a generator on my 2010 truck that I have 10,000 hours on and it still runs like new. It runs 10 hours everyday.
  • I've got 3400+ on our Onan QD10000.

I've seen race hauler / toters home with 6-10k hours on 'em.

the question really should be - was it cared for ? oil changed (every 500 hrs or annually ?) coolant flushed ? fuel filter changed regularly ? air filter changed ?

2000 hrs in a dusty environment w/ no service could be worse than one well cared for w/ 3x the hours.

    Should probably run 20,000 hours.
2000 is not much. Better having more, not less

Wow, I had no idea. I figured it was wore out at 2k.
  • I don't think that would be a huge concern. Run it with a load on for a hour or two and if everything works good, I say you are good to go. I bought a truck camper that had a on board generator. I started it and it ran fine. After I got it home and ran the AC for a extended period of time the voltage regulator started messing up. This generator only had like 70 hours on it or less. Fortunately for me this was not a big issue. I all ready had my honda eu3000 and was considering removing the on board one for more storage.
Probably better with 2000 than 200.
