Questions for those who tow a Honda CRV.....

We're thinking of getting a Honda CRV to tow behind our 2014 Navion, and have a few questions for you guys who are towing a CRV:

1. What hitch system & baseplate are you using?

2. What brake system are you using?

3. What else do we need to consider/include in the set up?

4. Where did you get the CRV set up for towing; i.e., baseplate and wiring installation?

5. What was the cost breakdown for parts and set up labor.

6. Anything you would have done differently?

Thank you

  • 2014 Honda CRV EX-L FWD

    1. BLUE OX ALADDIN TOWBAR (BX4325)
    BLUE OX BASEPLATE (BX2258)
    2. M&G Air Brakes
    3. Fuse Bypass Switch (RM76511)
    I needed a 4" Drop Hitch (RM070)
    4. I installed Baseplate & "separate" tail light wiring with 3 diodes
in each tail light. M&G in Athens, TX installed brake.
    5. Baseplate - $140 NEW on Craigslist. Wiring - about $65 piecemeal
    on EBAY & locally. Fuse switch - $70 ETRAILER. M&G Brake - $803
inc. tax + install ( I had Coach wiring & air setup already.
    6. Nothing that would pertain to you.
  • Roadmaster base-plate with Roadmaster Sterling towbar.

SMI Stay-N-Play brake system, just flip a switch, nothing to remove or replace.

LSL Toad-Charge to keep the battery charged.

Demco wiring harness to wire toad to MH.

I was a mechanic for 15 years, had a compressor and power tools and did all of the installation myself. About 8-10 hours total (not as young as I used to be) but figured I saved about $1,000, and I know it is done right and professionally.
  • Towed an 09 and now a 2011 Element.

I use a Ready Brute tow bar with built in braking; about the sme price as a braking system. Very good tow bar.

I use Demco baseplates/ Usually cheaper than everyone elses and I install myself.

I use magnetic lights that have been wired front to rear as I carry a Vespa and it blocks one tail light.
  • We're towing an '09 CRV. Using the ReadyBrake Elite towbar/brake combo. Happy with the system. No brake box to move or store.

Baseplate is a custom welded to match the MH hitch height. Installer was picked from the ReadyBrake list of dealers. Total for all including lights and install around $2500 in 2011.

Only regret is we didn't get a charge line installed. Using a battery cut-out, a minor inconvenience.

Note: recent CVT trans are not towable.
  • What year CRV are you thinking of getting? We have a 2013 AWD, 2014 is the last year towable 4 down. Two wheel drive 2015 & 16 are towable on a dolly, AWD can be towed only on a trailer. Dick

    1. What hitch system & baseplate are you using?
Roadmaster baseplate ordered on Amazon Roadmaster Falcon 2 that stays with the MH receiver.

    2. What brake system are you using?
BrakeBuddy basic purchased in 2005 for a previous Toad.

    3. What else do we need to consider/include in the set up?
I made and installed a fuse switch to shut off the correct fuse for towing.

    4. Where did you get the CRV set up for towing; i.e., baseplate and wiring installation?
I had baseplate installed by local farm equipment welding & fabricators that is also a dealer for Raodmaster products. I use magnetic LED towing lights. I ran wiring from front of CRV to inside the back with a plug so I don’t need to have wires outside the vehicle.

    5. What was the cost breakdown for parts and set up labor.
2 hours labor for baseplate install.

    6. Anything you would have done differently? If I ever need to replace the tow bar would get the Falcon II all terrain.
If I didn’t already have the BreakBuddy I would have gone for a built in brake system.
