Where to mount a brake controller in a 2014 Toyota Sequoia?

I had the Tundra which is basically the same dash and interior up front. I mounted mine into the plastic where it wraps under the dash, above my right knee. Two self tapping screws hold it in fine and if you ever remove it, you won't see the screw oles. You want it in a position where you can quickly get to it in an emergency. If you have the Tekonsha Prodigy, you have a lot of options in terms of angle as to where you can mount it.

I was going to post a photo to be sure I was looking at the same thing, but I can't find an option to do a simple upload of a photo. So, what I am looking at is three buttons L-R blank, VSC Off Indicator, and Rear Window Control, below that on the left is a series of 7 horizontal parallel indentions, and then below that on the right is an indention with a button, which I think if I recall is the maintenance reset button or something like that. So I am thinking you are talking about the area below the horizontal indentions and above the button.

If so, that causes it to sit at a very steep angle. I want to replace my old time-delayed controller with a proportional one, anyway, but I thought they needed to be relatively level? I have not yet investigated which one to get.

A Tekonsha P3 (and probably others) can be mounted at any tilt (up/down) angle. I've got mine mounted pointing about 40 degrees down. Whatever you decide, you need to make sure the manual control is easily accessible, that's the first thing you need to get to if you get sway.

I use this one and just hook the remote to the air vent when towing Tekonsha RF

The remote is only for info and to manually apply the brakes. All the controlling electronics are on the unit bolted to the TT.

First recommendation is to get a Tekonsha Prodigy controller; they can be mounted up to something like 30 degrees; don't need to be anywhere level. Then, while you're at it, order the Tekonsha pigtail adapter for Toyota (about $15) and the entire install is plug and play, no wires to splice.

Post your photo if you can and we can give you more info as to where to install.

Ron3rd & mike-s I looked up the installation instructions on the P3 and it seems that it can be mounted in any vertical angle so long as it is level horizontally and pointing forward. I'd like to post the photo, but it appears it has to already be online and url-addressed in order to do that. I'll check later today and see if I can figure anything out. The P3 looks like what I need.

neschultz, I am intrigued by the Tekonsha RF. I have read, though, that there can be problems with lost connections. The Amazon reviews seem mostly favorable but with a significant number of pairing problems. It seems to substitute a radio-linked unit on the trailer for a hard-wired unit in the vehicle. What would you say is the advantage to that (other than not having to find a spot to mount the controller in the vehicle)? Have others of you had experience with this type of controller? How reliable is it?

I read about people having problems pairing. We had none. Advantages: doesn't take knee room or require holes in dash; no tapping into wiring required (tekonsha plugs into truck, TT plugs into tekonsha); my son can easily borrow the TT without needing to buy a brake controller; I put the remote about an inch away from the gearshift lever so you can easily push the button if you need to.......without taking your eyes off the road.....I always had to fumble to find the one mounted somewhere near my knees that I couldn't see. The only disadvantage I see is that you can forget to use the remote.

Ron3rd, this is the area I understood you to mean. Is that right?

neschultz, it appears that the Tekonsha RF sits on the trailer frame. Is theft or weathering a problem? I asked about the advantages to think about the trade-off of it being more expensive.

Ron3rd and mike-s, the P3 unit said LCD. I have found LCD displays difficult or impossible to read when you are driving wearing sunglasses. Is this an issue with the P3 or not?
