- MEXICOWANDERERExplorerThis is supplemental not primary insulation. That being the case, foam board insulation starts out at R-16 down here. Primary is fiberglass batten about 2-1/4" worth. The reefer units are made in Mexico.
My best connection down here does not allow the use of SKYPE. So sensible download program downloading has to be done after midnight, but the store closes at 10:00PM. This is not cyber heaven.
The "internet" travels south to La Paz to the ISP 500 miles by microwave relay towers. There it is joined by Frame Relay to the fiber optic line that goes 900 miles north to Tijuana. What happens in and after Tijuana I have no idea. - westendExplorerMaybe I'm missing something about this project but R-12 for insulation of food storage space in Mexico doesn't seem right. I would assume that 4" of extruded foam or better would be the starting point. That would be in the neighborhood of R-20 or more. ISTR, a project in the Upper Midwest for freezer space was spec'd for 8" of foam by the builder to maintain freezer temps. He was also looking to achieve some energy savings.
- kellertx5erExplorerYou can download a demo version of Trane Trace software from Trane.com.
- MEXICOWANDERERExplorerGoooogle and download J site links did not load so after spending four hours with IR gun, tablet, calculator, aspirin, and Maalox...
The R factor of the double pane doors is almost identical to the five other sides. So it looks like R-12 is the winner. A 7-1/2 HP 3-phase compressor is not cheap to run 24/7
But I found another culprit. Their auto repair shop across the street is on the same four wire transformer. Their muffler shop wire welder kicks the demand digital meter up 2-full scales and holds it there 5-hours. They are not allowed a second meter and both the store and the shop use 3-phase and C.F.E. does not provide 3-phase transformers. The customers do.
So besides the insulation fix, I am now going to rewire a 6.5 NH Onan genset, then convert it to LPG with remote start/stop stations for the single phase welder. The store has three phase reefers the shop has 3 phase compressors, but relies on a gasoline driven compressor.
Life with Comision Federal de Electricidad, is not easy. Because I use less than 150 kWh every TWO months in my house, CFE has changed meters twice and obviously suspected a meter shunt wire bypass.
What costs perhaps $220.00 monthly in the states, costs more than $1,500 down here. That 30Kw transformer set them back almost six thousand dollars.
Thanks for the suggestions everyone! It turned out to be crucial moral support.
Sure wish I had my old Onan service manuals to do the genset stator re-connect. I'm sure it's presently connected for 65-amp 120vac service. - dclark1946ExplorerIf you don't find what you need I have my hand calculations for heat gain in the summer and loss in the winter that I could e-mail you. Once you have the area for your attic, walls and windows it is pretty straight forward. I also have a detailed work sheet that the power company used to provide. I did this back in the first energy crisis around 1976 as a fun engineering project. Based on the calculations, we added more insulation in the attic, installed storm windows and added 2 in. duct insulation over the original 1 in.
- phaysExplorerCould try this. 3E Plus program

Hoping a NERD may have run across an online calculator. Yeah, I'm old, lazy and grouchy so don't criticize.
Thank
You
Google " free Manual J calculator" - pianotunaNomad IIIIs the plan to "beef up" the insulation? If so there might just be a phone app that will read thermal images.
