New friction hinge RV door tough to open/close.

Our new 2018 Cougar has one of the new friction hinge doors and its difficult to open and close.

I see no adjustments on the hinge and oiling the hinge does nothing to ease it up.

Keystone calls it a feature but I'm no so sure. The only thing going for it is that you dont need to clip the door when it's in the full open position.

  • We have that hinge on our 5er. Took a little while to get used to it, but like it now.
  • I absolutely hate that "feature" on our new TT. I suspect this idea will be short lived but in the meantime, I would be willing to spend some money to thwart this stupid thing.

I just sent Lippert an email regarding this subject. We'll see what they say.
  • Op back...the problem is not latching the door closed, its strictly an issue with the force required to open and close it.

He is talking about the new style of hinges which by design take more effort to open and close. It's not a camber issue.

10-4 I have the friction hinge door, so I am familiar with it and it's problems.

Mine I had to adjust the camber as I couldn't get it to latch withough slamming.

I was also able to use a screw driver to open the jaws of the friction hinge a smidgen.

    Works good now

Not good on adding attachments but the above is the link

Sorry link does not take to support page
  • The technical term is Camber. The door has to much camber and needs flattened some.
  • If by close you mean to latch...as in you almost have to slam door. My rig was like that. There is a procedure from lippert on how to adjust the door. Basically on the latch side the door has a say 1/2 bow, so the top and bottom make contact and you have to flex the center by pulling on the latch to make it latch. You actually put a 2x4 in the door so the door won't close and flex it taking some of the bow out of the door,

There is an official procedure by LCI on this...but for the life of me I can not find it now.
  • We have the same door system in our trailer..Seem to be just about the perfect tension. Not hard to open or close but stays where we put it, even in the wind. No more slamming.

Sorry, I know I didn't help solve your issue, but we really like this feature.
