why does one arm of the awning stick?

NO they do not. Correctly installed Awnings do not rest on the top. Now, 40 years ago, That was true when they did not have Cam Locks to lock the awnings retracted. You never have to lift the arm to extend or retract. Doug

My 1973 Terry had that kind of awning.

I think you are saying when you release the catch and pull down on the cord, that only one side comes down and the other side is stuck together.

I have had that, but can yank on the stuck outer arm part, or use a crowbar, and it then all comes free and good to go from there.

You can also have an issue with raising the awning and one or both sides won't let the outer arm and the inner arm fit together once it is up, so you can engage the holder(s). You have to climb on a stand, and snap the two arms together by hand so the holder will go across to engage.

For the latter problem, you have to go to the upper end of the awning by the roof line, and undo the screws at each end, and slide the top over so the outer and inner arms line up, then tighten the screws up there.

For the situation first mentioned that the one end won't come down while the other end does, it might be the same thing. Not so sure about that. I can always yank it free, but it goes up ok.

I had one that did that. The upper mounting brackets had slots and I just had to recenter the uprights that were lag bolted to the wall. Craig

You don't state brand, but usually over the years the bottom mount bracket shifts downward slightly and the top of the swing out arm is resting on the top bracket. The top bracket should be about 1/4 inch higher than the top arm mount. You should be able to move it back and forth with your hand and not scrape anything. Doug

Sometimes the awning shifts on the roller causing one arm to stick. Make sure your awning fabric is centered and both arms are being pulled equally when it’s being rolled out.
