- Perrysburg_DodgExplorerWell most people buying half ton trucks are not towing anything big. This is a towing forum so most of us tow but it is not the norm. It isn't if Ford adds a diesel to the F-150 it is when. Mid 2017 is what was being thrown around but PUT.COM says 2018.
"Today we bring you further proof of a 2018 Ford F-150 with a turbo-diesel engine destined for sale.
“Caught earlier testing on Michigan roads, this emissions certificate on the back window of the prototype pickup indicates it is a 3.0-liter unit rather than the 3.2-liter diesel that's offered in the full-size Transit van. The JFC1-3.0-966 on the sticker is the emissions calibration code. The JFC1 is the control unit catchword; the 3.0 is the engine displacement; and the 966 is the last three digits of the vehicle tag number.
“This further confirms that Ford will be using the Lion V-6 found in current Jaguar/Land Rover vehicles such as the Range Rover. The engine was developed while Ford still owned JLR. The F-150 diesel is also identified by the venturi exhaust tip, necessary to more efficiently cool down gas temperatures.
“Ford will be gunning after the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, which uses an Italian-sourced 3.0-liter V-6 and eight-speed automatic transmission, for the segment fuel-economy victory. Whether or not the F-150 diesel (which may or may not be called a baby Power Stroke) will debut with the face-lifted F-150 series is uncertain (see last photo below), but it should come equipped with the new 10-speed automatic jointly developed with GM and going into the 2017 F-150 and Raptor. We expect to get our first chance to drive it next year."

Most people want a pick up that gets god mileage and that is not either Ecoboost engine.
not the numbers the Ram 3.0 EcoD is making anyway! Again good for Ford and I have to say I'm happy to see Ford phas pusked it back to 2018. That is when the New 1500 Ram comes out it will be interesting to see what each brings to the market.

A Diesel in a 1/2 ton is nothing but a payload hog. Makes a great grocery getter.
That's true today but if Ford put a small diesel in the new aluminum F150 chances are that it could have the same or more payload capacity as most 3/4 ton diesels. I wouldn't call a 1/2 ton truck with 2000+lbs of CCC a grocery getter. - wing_zealotExplorerA Diesel in a 1/2 ton is nothing but a payload hog. Makes a great grocery getter.

Great job on Fords part! Off hand I don't remember who is building the 10 speed Ford or GM but they are going to sell a ton of them. I'm waiting for Ford to bring out their 3.0 diesel in the F-150 with that 10 speed. I bet that is going to out sell the Eco-boost and end up killing those engines in Ford F-150. Time will tell.
As for the cost of a half ton truck, the people buying fully loaded pick-ups are using them (for the most part) as their primary mode of transportation. As others have said, you don't have to pay $65K to $74K on a LD truck if you don't want to. Then add in the $7K to
$10K off on half ton trucks and it is all relative.
GM and FCA had better bring it with their next full remodel if they want to stay in the LD pick up market. Toyota and Nissan's pick ups are going to be all but done in North America I think.

I seriously doubt a diesel powered F150 will outsell the EcoBoost powered F150.
I do agree that Toyota and Nissan full size trucks are in trouble.
:) Hi, exactly right; A half ton diesel will never out sell the Ecoboost. Perrysburg Dodgeboy wrote:

Don - VernDieselExplorerIts a pretty impressive truck and right for some people. I like power but am not that interested in drag racing a pick up. I really hope the 10 speed proves to be problem free. I guess I am more interested in fuel economy and long term problem free operation as I tow moderate loads daily. So I am looking forward to Ford getting the 3.0 liter diesel in the F150.
- Grit_dogNavigatorAnother cause of the insane truck prices is the lack of used inventory.
The economy and c rappy diesels for those few years, 08-11 ish, made for a lot less trucks sold. (Cars too, but not to the same extent). More folks hanging on to older diesels and trucks in general.
Now for the last couple years, that used market has suffered. Prices up on used = prices up on new.
I've ALWAYS found used vehicles to be a better bang for the buck, but right now today if I wanted a new or newer truck, I can buy one form one of the high volume dealers at almost the same price as what everyone wants for a similar used truck with up to about 50kmi.
Add in the hefty tax here that has been tacked onto everyone's loans and the stupid "want it now even though I can't afford it financing" and even in this decent economy, many are upside down on their loans. So them guys all ask more $ when selling and the folks who are holding their titles price the same and next thing you know, 8 year old trucks with 100kmi have $30k asking prices, private party! With the dealers being even higher!
It's crazy and another economic slowdown will be what it takes to correct that market abruptly, or if God willing the economy remains strong, it will correct slowly. - Grit_dogNavigatorAll the bs aside, the Eco boosts keep getting better! Just a flat out impressive drivetrain.
I'd love all the creature comforts, but it irritates me and my ocd when things don't work right and because of that I prefer more simplicity rather than fixing stuff or spending time going to the dealer......and money when out of warranty.
Time is the big thing....not enough of it for me.
Like last week, my old (2006) charger had been running too warm during our 2 day hot spell here, lol.
Has electric fans on the rad. Diagnosed the problem. Also found out there is a standing recall for this from years ago and my car fit the bill.
Looked at parts online.
My options were spend better part of a day going/ fighting for the recall, buy OE parts online for about $500 or run to Autozone, buy the whole assembly for $180.
2 hours later, the car had new autozone fan assembly and I was on to the next project.
