- STANG23LExplorerAlso keep in mind the days of the old Formaldehyde based products are long gone. These products are now banned from use. Everything on the market these days need to be biodegradable.
- dadmomhExplorerWe used a product, Odor-los, and it was great. No odors, an enzyme product to help break down solids, easy with 1 - 2 scoops. Never had that "blue stuff" odor. Many swear by the Geo method, which is basic household products and they are very pleased. We used the "blue stuff" back in our mid 80's boating days when there wasn't much else on the market. When we stepped into the boat the next weekend, the odor from the blue stuff would knock you over.
Re TP...we always used just the least $ single ply white stuff we could find. Never any problems, no clogs. RV TP is a pricey item you don't need.
The one thing to remember about the black tank is WATER, plenty of water. If you don't use enough water, the solids will build up in the bottom of the tank and turn into near-concrete. Many hold off dumping until the tank is about 2/3 full. We almost always dumped at the end of each weekend. - rockhillmanorExplorer II
RV aftermarket/accessory industry has convinced many they MUST have......
The awful chemical smell did actually come through but only when the toilet was opened for flushing. But it lingered.....
I never have this problem with the biodegradable "Matter" that is normally stored in that tank......
Apparently you have never RV'd to the deep South where the temps can hit 100 and all your 'matter' starts brewing and heating up. The 'correct' chems (NOT perfumed deodorizers) do NOT emit a smell when you flush.
Funny you should mention that you do KNOW that when you flush the smell came INTO your RV. Well so does untreated raw sewage/bacteria from an RV holding tank every time you flush.
There is NO ptrap in an RV like your house toilet it's a straight open shot to the holding tank. Heat that sewage up in warm weather and the smell WILL come into the RV every time you flush.
That is the reason holding tank chemicals are available to treat the raw sewage and prevent raw sewage smell and bacteria from coming into the RV or boat.
Marine/RV holding tank chemicals have been available for years and there are tens of thousands of RV'ers and Boaters that use them
No one convinced us to buy them, it is part of responsible RV'ing.
Everyone can do exactly what they please. Part of being in America!
But IMHO everyone should know 'why' holding tanks chems are sold and used.:W - 4X4DodgerExplorer IIThis is one of those products that the RV aftermarket/accessory industry has convinced many they MUST have.
It is virtually pouring good money right down the toilet.
The RV Toilet paper is another.
I have never needed to buy either. Though I did do an experiment. A jug of the stuff came with my traieler as part of the Dealers package.
After using nothing for about two months....and having no smell whatsoever...I tried the chemicals...The awful chemical smell did actually come through but only when the toilet was opened for flushing. But it lingered.

And there was absolutely no difference in dumping my tanks with or without the chemical as I deal with them as they are supposed to be and let them fill before dumping. - JebsterExplorerWe have used Happy Camper for the past 3 years and have had no odors at all. I think we tried every product out there before finding HC. .
- rockhillmanorExplorer IIBe careful using bleach when urine is involved. :W
- TequilaExplorerHappy camper. I used to use enzymes, then took a trip to Baja in July 2004. It stopped working in the extreme heat and I had to resort to bleach till I got back into the US. Went to a good sam rally and saw happy camper. Snake oil, I thought. I have now used it for 12 years and never looked back. It's also the cheapest product I have used, it lasts a long time and high heat does not bother it.
- TBammerExplorerHappy Camper. I was amazed at how well it worked
- myredracerExplorer III don't see the need for chemicals of any kind in the black tank for odor control or to aid breakdown except for when a deep cleaning is needed. The toilet is only open to the tank for a very brief moment and you shouldn't normally be smelling much of anything and if you do, it could be for another reason. I make sure it's well flushed after each dump of the tank. A vent fan can draw more odors into the bathroom.
I spent every summer in my youth at my parent's cabin and it had a very stinky outhouse, especially in the summertime. An RV toilet is like perfume in comparison. (Then there was all the mosquitoes, spiders and wasp nests.) - K-9_HANDLERExplorer

We use nothing, just flush the tanks well at the end of each trip. It works.
