Somewhat true. Many dealers do try to sell 3rd party as they have higher profit margins than factory warranties. However, most will sell the factory warranty as well.

With GM you can purchase the extended warranty any time before is goes out of warranty. If you are not the original owner you need to find out the "first put in service" date and the 3/36 starts from there. I know there is more warranty on the Duramax.
I just bought a used 2014 Chev 3500HD with 7400 miles and the Chevy dealer told me that I would need to get extended within the 3 year/36000 mile period. Mine was first put in service August 2013 so I have until the date in August 2016 barring mileage overage.

That was several years ago, so compare prices.

Read the info at the site I linked, and then google the actual name of GM's protection plan and you find more GM dealers selling it at low prices.

I would try a google search for GM extended factory warranty. If available there are likely GM dealers out there that will discount the warranty. Not sure about GM as I am a Ford guy but I just got an offer from Ford for a variety of extended factory warranties. It went up to 150,000 miles / 8 years and several deductible choices. My truck is a 2013 with 27,000, so you do not have to buy immediately, at least not with Ford. Out of curiosity I looked online and found several dealers who sell the actual Ford warranty at a discount. Of course the longer it goes and more it covers the price is higher. I did notice that a power train only warranty, which is apparently what you want, was about 58percent cost wise compared to a full coverage warranty. I am sure the price varies based on the vehicle, just like health insurance, would be based on potential cost or risk.

If you really want an extended warranty, try your credit union. It'll cost you less. One thing I've learned is that if you have a decent credit union, they will be on your side when it comes to warranty issues with the dealer. It's worth a look.

That said, be aware that some of these so-called extended warranties are actually entitled "Service contracts" and are not true warranties. They will only cover exactly what is listed in the contract and they are very good about not paying. I bought one for my wife's jeep. The control door failed in her ventilation system. The service contract stated that they would cover AC components and Heating components, but since the door wasn't specifically listed, they didn't cover it. Never mind that neither the heating system or AC system could possibly operate with the door stuck. And I had foolishly bought the highest warranty on the Jeep I could. They even call it "Comprehensive", though it was anything but. I couldn't take it back to the original dealer either because they went out of business. The company mine was through was Premier Dealer Services. Do not get an extended warranty *cough* service contract with them.

I'm thinking about checking out breakdown insurance for my next vehicle instead of an actual warranty. Other than that, I'm never buying an extended warranty *cough* service contract again.

It is indeed possible to extend factory-like full coverage but it will cost you a boat load of money and GM themselves might not even offer it.

If you insist on doing this, cover ONLY the engine and transmission and all related computer and electronics components. Have at least a $200 deductible. That brings the cost down a lot.

I can absolutely see where the OP is coming from. WHile extended warranties may not make sense for a majority of the vehicles on the road that is not so much the case with current Ford and GM diesel trucks using the CP4 injection pump. When they fail (rare but they do...) your looking at over $10K in repair bills to replace the entire fuel system.

I generally keep my vehicles 10-12 yr but will be selling my 2012 Dmax before it rolls 100K mi simply because of the CP4

Several years ago I bought a new Toyota. They wanted to sell me an extended warranty. But, I had to purchase it immediately.
125,000 trouble free miles later, it's still running as good as the day we brought it home. And it still looks very good.
I'm glad I didn't fall for their sales pitch, which I felt was a waste of money.

Take that extended warranty money and use it to purchase a lift pump (FASS or Airdog) and your CP4 shouldn't give you any trouble.
