Planning a trip to Alaska. My truck has a small tank and big motor about 200 mile range towing. I thought of getting. Couple of jerry cans 5 gallon and mounting them in the bed for truck and generator. I noticed ebay has different brands some even plastic. Any brands you would recommend? I seen VP makes some short plastic cans you see a lot of in use in racing or would you recommend the old metal jerry cans?I know they might not be needed but for peace of mind along with generator I thought this might be a good idea.Would you see any trouble crossing the border with 2 gas cans?

We use VP Racing Cans which are plastic 5 gallon containers for transporting gas for racing. They travel in a built in retainer in the race hauler. You can no longer use portable metal cans in many places up here in the northeast to transport gasoline.

Good idea on the fuel..200 isn't a lot of distance, considering you might run across closures. Buy some of the plastic ones and a funnel, from your local big box store. Maybe don't fill them till you get to northern BC. Yes, it will cost you a wee bit more, but better than having it just sloshing around looking for an opportunity to leak. Gary Haupt

For what it's worth, I can't recall any place where we had to drive MORE than about 200 miles between stations (as long as you travel during daylight hours)but probably wouldn't be a good idea to try and stretch to the next one. Drive as much as you can on the top half of your tank.

I start looking for a gas station when my tank gets just below 1/2. No point risking running out. And , besides you need to stretch your legs.

Last Sept. 2014, I stopped at Watson Lake, Dease Lake & Bell ll, after that i was on 16 with plenty of small towns with gas.
Bell ll was the most expensive, but when you need fuel you pay the price not like you can fill up at the next corner.
The most expensive fuel on the entire trp was on the Alaska hwy near Teslin at a lodge, I can't remember the name.

self priming Siphon/ Syphon Hose has a 1/2" diamater, 6 Foot long anti-static , anti-spark hose with a 3/4" diameter copper tip that contains a check valve (a glass ball and stainless steel spring). The secret to the Siphon Hose is in this check valve which makes it self-priming.

Works well and you don't have to hold a 5 gallon in some awful position to empty the can.

Buy the plastic gas cans they work best.

I take one across the boarder every time I cross, no one has ever questioned me.

Between Fort Nelson and Whitehorse you missed the Lodge at Liard HotSprings, Watson Lake, and Jake's Corner. I don't know if Johnson's Crossing will have fuel, or not, this year.

Between Whitehorse and Beaver Creek there is also fuel at Haines Junction, Destruction Bay, and Burwash Landing. Border City isn't reliable for fuel, but Northway has fuel.

Having said that, it isn't uncommon for a station to run out of fuel and it can be a 2-3 day wait for delivery. I saw this sign while we were filling with diesel :B

A 200 mile range should be no problem. The longest stretch is Ft St John to Watson Lake. Fuel is available at Pink Mountain, Sasquatch Crossing, Ft Nelson, Toad River, Contact Creek, Teslin Yukon Motel, Whitehorse, Otter Falls Cutoff, Beaver Creek, Border City and Tok. Others may also be available, but I have noticed some places come and go.

If you plan on using a ferry anywhere, you may have your cans removed as a prohibited item. If you plan to do the Cassiar you may want to get a can for that portion of the trip.

I don't believe they are legal anywhere in Canada; I do know that they can no longer be legally sold.

I use cans for my boat when we are on our houseboat. I hate the metal cans. if you leave them on carpet, they can leave rust stains. They also dont' seem to drain as well (quickly) as the plastic.

Personally, I would look for some of the older ones on Craigslist. The new EPA compliant ones with the built in funnel drains much slower than the old ones with a breather hole. You can modify the new ones with by drilling a hole in them and using a screw.
