- rocmocExplorerI also purchase Mexican Liability Insurance for my bike just in case! I also did the same when I took a UTV SOB.
rocmoc n AZ/Mexico - MEXICOWANDERERExplorer500 cc & under are added as an accessory onto your car permit and do not need an additional permit.
However
They do need a license plate and lights to be legal on a public roadway. Same goes for wearing a helmet. Xerox a copy of your car permit. Carry it with you. You need state issued proof of ownership at the border in order to get it added on as an accessory.
Sad to say thievery of that size bike is rampant down here. Even in small towns. Use wisdom. - rocmocExplorerI dirt bike (motorcycle) / off road and the only concern is Lock Up your bike when you are not on or with your bike. I put a lock thu the rear sprocket and cable lock to a pole (or something permanent). A couple of guys I know (first hand knowledge) have returned from being in a store and found their bike gone. Of course I do the same with our bicycles when we take them out also. I also do the same when out in the desert of the SoutWest USA.
rocmoc n AZ/Mexico - KidooExplorerI was in Cancun last fall and there was motorcycle and scooter, looked OK. I saw some of them where passing between the bus and the boardwalk, very tight, the bus driver seemed to be ok with this! This is something we learned not to do in my town, people could just try to run you over.
- Wm_ElliotExplorer8,000 miles in Mexico on a motorcycle and I saw the most street bikes around Mexico City but not many elsewhere, but that was in March. There are new Harley Davidson dealerships opening big full service dealerships throughout Mexico.
- qtla9111NomadIn the north we have many motorcycle clubs. In Monterrey there are two Harley dealers and they have a huge following. Hundreds head to the highway every Sunday south from Monterrey to Linares and Los Rayones both are about 1.5 hours from Mty.
- Wm_ElliotExplorerMost motorcycles in Mexico are small displacement bikes that can't keep up with traffic so they ride to the right like bicycles. Motorists are sometimes surprised to see a motorcycle keeping up with traffic.
I ride fast so I fit in well with the flow, but it could be intimidating for slower riders. A few drivers will tailgate or try to squeeze ahead of you in their race to get wherever they are going, but we didn't have any really close calls. Despite appearances to the contrary, most Mexicans are pretty skillful drivers who know exactly where their bumper is. - mexicorussExplorer IIRegarding how the Mexicans feel about motorcycles.......the motorcycle culture is alive and well in Mexico, at our last rally in Peñasco we had over 7000 bikes attend, the majority were from Mexico. All over Mexico.
- darbone85737ExplorerWe considered a motorcycle in Nayarit but I'm glad we left it home. The roads are horrible and Mexican drivers are crazy.
- Wm_ElliotExplorerMy last two trips were on a motorcycle (sport tourer, 1000cc). Rode from Laredo to Palenque year 2 and Laredo to Acapulco year 1 - about 4,000 miles each trip.
It was great! Scenic mountain roads with no radar or speed enforcement. Warm (sometimes hot) weather with next to no rain.
I was worried about the Africanized bee swarms we had driven through in a pickup previously but I rode through smaller swarms on the bike with just one or two stings (good for arthritus).
Windshield washers at red lights ignore motorcycles and you can lane split in traffic and to the front of the line at customs.
The bad part is topes. Hit at any sort of speed and our heavy bike bottoms out. The wife had (past tense) an MP3 player in her shirt pocket until we hit one unexpected tope out in the country.
