Travel through Maryland on I-95

We are planning a trip from New York to Florida this summer. Looking at routes, I see there is at least 1 tunnel in Maryland to go through.

Are there any rules or laws about propane in the travel trailer we need to worry about.

Any other things we should look out for on this trip.

Thanks for your help.

  • Bay Bridge-Tunnel, for sure. Nice drive. Congestion on I-95 doesn't ease up until you are south of Fredericksburg, IMHO.

    One more option around Baltimore that we always use;

Directions around Baltimore using Maryland’s Eastern Shore from the Delaware Memorial Bridge. IMHO avoid all cities during Rush Hour + Travel time 9:30 – 3:00 and always check for construction.

    Printed directions

    From I-95 or I-295
    On I-95 South -- to Exit 4A Rt 1/7 Christiana Rd -- South -- 4 +- miles
Merge into Rt 13/1 South -- 5+- miles over Chesapeake and Delaware Canal
Exit 148 right lane immediately after CDC Bridge this will loop under the Bridge to
    Rt 13 South -- 3+- miles to
Right turn on Rt 896 West -- 3+- miles to
Left on Rt 301 South This will take you over the Bay Bridge (No Toll) to Annapolis you can continue on Rt 301 South or take Rt 50 to Washington DC and I-95

This will get you around Baltimore is a very pleasant drive on MD's Eastern Shore -- stay 9 over the speed limit Max and you will be fine.

After driving up to my Son's college for five years in NJ I found this is one of the most pleasant drives around. (4 years for him 1 year for his friends)

Hope this is of some help,

Saves money and time -- and is so much less stress!

  • When we travel that area the way we go depends on what time of day it is. After 6pm we stay on 95 then go 695 East around the tunnel. Before 6pm we run the CBBT. If you do choose the CBBT use 113 off of 13 in MD/DE. It is a bit longer...but you miss the 17 stoplights in 10 or so miles. 113 makes a short loop towards the coast and joins back up with 13. The other important thing to remember is the Delaware Memorial Bridge. If you have purchased an EZ Pass to use on the many toll roads north of NC, DO NOT use it at the DMB. Their system doesn't know the difference between an RV and a Commercial truck. You will get charged $20 instead of $8-$10. They recommend you put the EZ Pass in it's foil bag and go to the cash lane. I found this out the hard way!
  • I live in the heart of the construction zone on I-95 in northern Virginia. Traffic congestion is the worst I have ever seen it. I used to tell people there were windows of opportunity to make a smooth transit through here. Not now, and not for the foreseeable future. If it isn't construction bringing traffic to a standstill, it's an accident. Do yourself a favor and avoid this area.
  • If you hit the Baltimore Beltway (695) at 10AM, you should have no problem the rest of the way through Maryland into VA. Take 695 East to the Key Bridge. Then return to 95S. From the Key Bridge to the Wilson Bridge (95 over the Potomac) shouldn't take you more than an hour, hour and half, tops. So it would be about 11:30, which should make the trip through Northern VA fairly painless.

Do not travel South on 95 through NoVA 2-7PM on weekdays. Don't travel on 95S between Baltimore and DC 7AM-9AM weekdays. Don't take 50W 7-9AM weekdays. 95/495 around DC shouldn't be traveled 7-9AM or 4-7PM. Unless you enjoy traffic. Lots and lots of traffic. I've lived here for 30 years and those are my rules for sanity. You can travel on 3/301S from Baltimore into VA, crossing the Nice Bridge, but the traffic lights along the route slow you way down and it is useful really only during PM rush hour when trying to get into VA going south.
  • Paying the toll & doing the CBBT is worth the savings in aggravation of getting through Baltimore & Washington. Next best bet would be the rt 301 which is also a decent drive once past Waldorf, MD. Staying on 301 once over the Potomac is a very nice alternate to the I95 raceway.
  • Suggest you look at getting off in Delaware and take Rt. 301 on the eastern shore of Maryland across the Cheasapeake Bay Bridge and Rt. 50 over to Rt.95 south. No tunnel, relaxed drive. Search routes on this site someone has already mapped it out. Check out the Rt. 95 delays in Northern Va., they are widdening the road again and do have possible lane closures.
  • I agree with raindove. You can get around the tunnel, but the Bay Bridge Tunnel is a nice drive.
  • You can't take propane through the tunnel in MD. You want to avoid the beltways around Baltimore and Wash DC at rush hour times, at all cost.

You may want to consider going down through DE, MD and across the Chesapeake Bridge Tunnel to VA. Much easier drive. It's beautiful out on the bridge. Propane is okay here, as long as it's turned off.
