- wbwoodExplorerIf you are looking for quiet, then I would look far outside of myrtle beach.

Huntington Beach State Park if you want quiet, Ocean Lakes if you want 'busy' stuff close by.
x2 When we were there, we picked HB because we wanted a degree of quiet. This was during spring break and we could still lay a towel out on the beach and not feel crowded. Some FHU. Much better spacing between sites, too. Zoom in on Google maps or the like and compare HBSP to Pirateland, Ocean Lakes, etc. and you'll see the difference. HB is also close to some wonderful dining options in Murrells Inlet. Atalaya, on the grounds of HBSP, is in interesting place to poke around when you tire of the beach. - wbwoodExplorerReader1, we also like to cruise around over around the homes (southside) as well. There area a few spots around some other ponds that are nice to go to. If you didn't go over in that area, you wouldn't know about them. The golf cart is a big help with the laundry. Also for going to the Sandy Mart (getting ice and other things) and the "Meet n Eat". We sometimes go there to get food or ice cream. It's also much easier to drive a golf cart with one hand and eat an ice cream than to ride a bike and do it. LOL
Some people have their golf carts registered with the state and can drive them out the gate. I've seen a couple of them cross Hwy 17. I think they are a bit crazy on that, but if you go out the south gate, you can stay on that side of the highway and access several things down there that way. You can also cut down to surfside beach where there are some restaurants. Our favorite there is Bubba's Fish Shack. - Reader1ExplorerWbwood - Thanks. You are right Ocean Lakes is pretty big to walk around. I haven't had to do laundry while there but I can see where a golf cart would help. We take our bikes and ride to the pool and all around the park. We also like to see others rigs and set ups. We have learned a lot by doing that.

We have only stayed at Ocean Lakes so can't compare to others, but we loved it. We do go after Labor Day so it is not as crowded. We get that golf carts are really great for people w/ physical issues, but don't understand the fascination with golf carts for everyone else, but to each his own.
Cruising on the strip at night is fun. The teenagers usually make it comical for us. It's nice to see all the different golf carts and what people do them (customize and decorate). If you don't have a golf cart, you probably don't see a lot of Ocean Lakes. Part of the fun is riding around and looking at other peoples rigs and how they set up. You will be amazed and things you will see and never knew existed. Or ideas that you never thought of. Also, if you are at one end of the park and want to go to the other side where the pool is, it makes no sense to drive a car (or esepcially a truck) over there. First of all, parking is very limited. You can ride a bike or walk. But i've walked it. Plan on the extra time and hope it doesnt rain on you. We've taken our bikes before, but never really ride them around.
Also, much easier to take your laundry over to the laundrymat or go pick up things at the store there.
If one has physical issues, then they probably needed one of those electric mobility scooters, rather than a golf cart. - Reader1ExplorerWe have only stayed at Ocean Lakes so can't compare to others, but we loved it. Agreed...there's really no bad campground if you are camping...might not be as preferrable as others. But any day camping (no matter where) is better than any day not camping. - mockybirdExplorerAnd to that I say " case closed" ....Because I agree with Mcamper AND everyone else....There is no bad choice. We're planning our first big camping trip and are leaning toward Myrtle Beach. We've heard great things about Pirateland. Any thoughts or suggestions vs. Lakewood or any others nearby?
Wouldn't mind hearing from any of you on your suggestions for other waterfront parks on the east coast.
Thanks!!
Hello,
You did not say what time of year you were planning your trip. It is true that these campgrounds are busier during the summer. It is not so busy that you will not enjoy your vacation, as some of the posters would have you think. You will not find seclusion at many ocean campgrounds in the summer!
I agree with the suggestions of carefully examining each campground to find what matches your interest. I may prefer one campground over the next because of a reason that is not important to you. To say all of the campgrounds in the Myrtle Beach area are the about the same, or equal is absolutely not true.
You mentioned Pirateland and Lakewood. I think either of those would be a great choice. Everyone has a favorite for one reason or another.
Let us know what you decide, and good luck!
