Crater Lake N Entrance closed

I just read that the north entrance to CLNP is closed, and the highway that runs along the north/northwest side is also closed due to the fire on the NW side of the park. The park's webcam showed heavy smoke obscuring the lake view

The fire is approx 6 miles from the lake, and headed that way. 10% contained

National Creek Complex Fire

Is anyone there, or was there in the last few days? Do I drive 300 miles out of my way to see the lake; or do I come back another year?

  • I DID discover that many of these major fires have Facebook Pages (!). It's pretty nice, because they include stuff like Air Quality charts. Because of that, you can read comments from the public; and it seems that the problem with this particular fire is that the National Park won't let heavy equipment into the park to clear firebreaks. In other words, they're not fighting this one unless it's threatening buildings/homes, etc? And I'm not being critical - I understand that there are limited resources to fight ALL the fires currently burning. But unless Mother Nature steps in and douses this blaze, I think we'll save that trip for a later visit. We'll just follow the coastline and stay upwind of the fires.
  • You can get there from the south up thru Medford on Hwy. 62. They closed the north entrance last week.
  • Sadly you might need to come back another year, and you can see it without the heavy smoke.
Some parts of highway 395 have been closed from time to time as well.

If you do end up in Grants Pass, there is a jet boat ride down the Rouge River, and it is great. They sell the tickets at the hotel on 7th, near the Rouge River Bridge.
