- crosscheckExplorer IIWe had a very pleasant stay in Dead Horse State Park. We were put in the non- services overflow area which for us was virtually empty and quiet.
If you have a mountain bike or just like hiking, ask the ranger about local routes up in the hills.
The walk or ride along the tails that follow the Verde river in the cottonwoods are kinda neat due to the birdlife.

We now stay in Williams at Grand Canyon Railroad RV park or Circle Pines RV. Both are very nice. GC RV park is rather new, modern and allows use of their hotels indoor pool nearby. Around Williams is Bearizona drive thru animal park, deer farm petting zoo, Grand Canyon Railroad, Zip Line and Williams itself on route 66.
When we were in that area back in 2008 we chose to stay in Williams at the Grand Canyon Railway CG as well and it isn't far of a drive to Sedona or Flagstaff...you will be west of both on I-40.
We did like the Route 66 town of Williams and we took the train up to the Grand Canyon...keeping in mind our travels were in July...
Williams is a neat town as is Sedona...after leaving that area we headed north up to Bryce Canyon...
One tip...when in Sedona area...make sure you take the trip up to Jerome...it was once an old copper mining town on the hill...mines dried up and the hippies moved in in the 60's...never left...except today they call themselves "artists"...LOL
Good luck,
Joe. - ReadyToGoExplorerOne more thing about Dead Horse, it is about half the price of Sedona CGs.
- 2gypsies1Explorer IIII believe Bonito and Pine Grove national forest campgrounds near Flagstaff will be closed at that time. They are excellent choices though.
We love Dead Horse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood. It's a short drive to Sedona, Jerome, Prescott. Lots to do in the area. Have fun! - trailertravelerExplorerIf you do not need hookups, take a look at Bonito Campground North of Flagstaff just outside of Sunset Crater National Monument. Easy to visit Wupatki and Walnut Canyon National Monuments from there also.
Dead Horse Point State Park in Cottonwood is nice. There are also a number of other decent RV parks in the Cottonwood and Camp Verde area including a former Thousand Trails Park that participates in a number of discount programs including Passport America.
If you are looking for things to do, consider the Verde Canyon Railroad. - linnemjExplorerJust head to Dead horse Ranch. We just got back from there a few weeks ago. We camped in the lower loop which has decent pull thru and back in sites. You are close to Jerome and about 25 minutes south of Sedona. You want the lower elevation. Ask about the paths from the campground to the historic part of Cottonwood - nice short walk.
- Savary_PhilExplorerAnother vote for Deadhorse SP.
- LaurenExplorerI would avoid Rancho Sedona and look at Distant Drums for Sedona. We have also found that the RV parks in Flag leave a lot to be desired. Probably the best is J & H or whatever it is; but rules, rules and rules (unless he has changed).
Lots around Flag to see - get to Grand Falls. See www.LaurenBarbara.com then Wanderings then AZ for pix. Hardly anyone goes there and bigger than Niagara Falls (when the water if running!) - JanssExplorer IIAnd there's Rancho Sedona RV Park right in Sedona.
- mileshuffExplorerNot impressed with campgrounds in Flagstaff area. KOA, Blackbarts etc. Rather poor quality. Woody Mountain is decent, nice forested spots but bathrooms are a bit rough. To the south on I-17 is Munds Park which has a nice RV park.

Keep in mind that late Oct. and early Nov. can be very cold at night. While rare it can snow this time of year in Williams or Flagstaff. Sedona will be warmer.
Distant Drums RV park on I-17 in Camp Verde is very nice. Nearby is the Out of Africa wild life park, Verde Railroad, Indian Ruins and Casino.
