- EsoxLuciusExplorerI think you will have to go to Sioux Falls. I don't think there is a mail forwarding service in North Sioux City.
- mmiilleExplorerIs there one or two of these mail forwarding places in North Sioux City, SD? I am in Sioux City a few times a year and could stay there a night or two and sign up for a new address. Sounds like auto and rv insurance and license plates will be a lot cheaper for me.

We chose Florida for several reasons, but I did hear some issues with SD if you need to get Obamacare. It seems there are only a few choices at the SD exchange, and one of which wants 6-9 months of utility receipts to prove you are a real SD resident. Not too easy to do if you are fulltimer. One company offers health insurance for the state only. Also not too good if you want to leave the state.
A few years ago when we went full time, we took SD off the table right away because we didn't want to have to go back there every year or so to register the RV or get new drivers licenses, or jury duty. It can be a problem in the winter due to the weather.
Howard of the RV-Dreams blog did a good post about SD and the Obamacare issues. If you don't need it, you would be okay. He also has some good information about choosing your state of residence.
FL doesn't participate in any multi-state plans under Obamacare at this time either
Multi-state Plans & Healthcare Market Place.....LINK
The multistate plans are a red herring here...a msp will not necessarily have nationwide coverage, and conversely, a non-msp can have nationwide coverage. It is the network that is key, not what they call the plan. - jrpExplorerIf you continued reading down a bit further in your "clicky" link you'd find that SD created a specific exception to those "Real ID Law" residence proof requirements, for fulltimers:
Address Exceptions:
People who travel full-time - If you are using a South Dakota mail forwarding address, you will need to complete the Residency Affidavit. You will also need to provide one document proving your temporary South Dakota address (a campground or RV park receipt no more than one year old) and one document no more than one year old proving your personal mailbox (PMB) service address - RVUSAExplorer

This smells very similar to Florida's one time registration deal. You need to check what the SD DMV says about getting a license and tag. It's obviously very different from what your mail forwarding service is telling you. (You cant claim you live there if you dont, just like florida).New Requirements for All Driver License and ID Card Applicants Effective 12/31/09
Federal requirements have changed the documents required to obtain or renew your South Dakota driver license or identification card. We want to make the process as quick and easy as possible for you.
...
MUST HAVE TWO documents to prove your residential/physical address. A parent's proof of address is acceptable for a minor child. Proof of address documents may not be more than one year old. Please bring two of the documents listed below (each must contain your name and current address):
Utility bill
Credit card statement
Pay stub or earnings statement
Rent receipt
Phone bill
Transcript or report card from an accredited school
Bank statement
Mortgage document
Tax document
Homeowners/renter's insurance policy
Other items with your address can be reviewed by Driver Licensing personnel
If you are unable to provide proof of residency, please call 1.800.952.3696 or 605.773.6883 for exceptions.
clicky - restlesswindExplorerSD drivers license....SD recently passed a law that let us renew our drivers license, one time,on line.I don't know if they have actually implemented the new law.But it will save many of us at least one trip "back home" to drop into the DMV.
We still have a couple of years to go before we need to renew.
SD makes it convenient for fulltimers. They get to claim us as part of the state population (government funding, etc) and don't have to "put up with us"
Just checked with SD DMV.Online renewal is up and running.

No state income tax for Texas either.
Having lived here for 27 years, not having to fill out state income tax returns is a major advantage of Texas.
Of course, we have to pay sales taxes and property taxes at rates higher than many states with an income tax. After all it takes about $X per person for the state to run and provide services, and they have to get the money someway. It might cost more in the long run to live in Texas than one of the other states.
But we know the rules and process - so that is one reason we are staying with Texas for our residence.
However, we are moving our residence to Escapees because we will no longer own any property next month. Heck, moving out of metro-Dallas area will help with insurance rates.
One reason I've decided to stay with Texas is the state has a large number of 'mobile' workers. People who leave Texas to work in other states, and come back home for the winter or between jobs.
We RV folks benefit from being part of that voting block so I feel it will be very unlikely the state legislature will impose any limits on RV folks in the next few years.
That mobile worker population is also a reason that several national coverage plans are available under the ACA through the MarketPlace for Texas residents. It is a large enough group to make it worth the insurance companies profits to go after their business. - jnharleyExplorerIf you are flying in, make sure you have all the documentation to get your drivers license. Spouse renewed this last year in Madison, SD and they have a document examiner who checks out your paperwork, 3 out of 4 people had to get additional paperwork. For women it can be really difficult. If you have a passport in your current name, that is a good thing. Otherwise. women have to prove by documentation all their legal names that have occurred with marriage, divorce, remarriage, etc, would be terrible to fly In and not have the proper documentation. Your mail forwarding service will be able to assist you. We use MyDakotaAdress and are very pleased with our service.
- jrpExplorer"" Do you have to take your MH to SD and spend a night or can you just fly in and do all the paperwork?? ""
assuming you have the mail forwarding service register your vehicles remotely, then yes you may just fly in, spend a night, get a receipt for the overnight with your name on it (both names if a couple) and then go to the DMV (with all your other docs required) for your DL.
when I renewed my SD DL last year, after 5 yrs, I was traveling in the SW and didn't want to drive to SD and back, so I just flew in and stayed overnight. My mail forwarding service (Americas Mailbox) has 4 motel like rooms in their building just for that purpose, as well as 30 RV spaces out back. As long as you have all the identity docs required for the new Federal Real ID law, getting the DL is a 10 min process. - RV_daytraderExplorer

I am newly retired from Michigan, who now taxes retirement income, have been giving some thought to "relocating to a different state". What do you need to document your move to a new State, when you travel full time?
Set up a mail forwarding service so you have a 'physical' address.
They can also handle registering your vehicle for SD plates (for a fee)
Then you drive over to SD....stay one night and keep receipt. Get the receipt in BOTH names.
Next day go to local Department of Public Safety office with proper documentation and application for DL and sign an affidavit as to SD being your only state of 'domicile'
Register to vote, change of address, change your will/trust, banking etc.
SD DPS.......LINK
Also check into medical coverage/insurance available in SD.
Do you have to take your MH to SD and spend a night or can you just fly in and do all the paperwork??
