Anyone ever used GS insurance through National General?

I was involved in a pretty good fender bender with my travel trailer the other day (not my fault, old man pulled out in front of me). NG adjuster supposed to call me Monday. I've got heavy damage on right front of TT but it was still livable for our trip.
This is my first TT and first claim for a TT. What happens with a TT claim? How does it work if it ends up being totaled? We've got GAP insurance through the bank.

Just curious what I should expect from NG.
thanks

  • We have some experience with NG after turning in a claim on our 9-year-old 5th wheel after hitting a bad pot hole. The frame and slide were bent so it was unsafe to use as a result of the accident. NG did pay for most of the extensive repairs, which included straightening the frame at a big rig repair shop. NG would not pay for an extra beam to reinforce the frame since the 5th wheel didn't originally have one. The repair process took about 2 months--partly because of NG's response in approving repairs and the extensiveness of the repairs. The owner of the NG approved repair facility told us he couldn't believe the adjuster didn't total the unit because of the extensive damage. Our RV was mostly fixed, but still showed some signs of damage and a slide that worked but did not seal as tight as before.
  • Some final notes on the subject. After dealing with other people at NG I cannot say NG did not do their job at an acceptable pace. I can say with confidence that CW needs to follow instructions a little better, that would have trimmed at least 4 to 5 days off the process. I can also say that other folks at NG were very polite and helpful including my assigned representative in the total loss department who was AWESOME to deal with. It seems after talking with other claim reps and finding how helpful they were I was just unlucky in getting the one who a) had no personality, and b) didn't like to share information, timelines or anything else without me calling.
Otherwise NG was good to deal with, although, they may want to find some independent RV repair shops to deal with, because I would not recommend a CW shop to anyone.
  • I did receive a call from NG and have identified some areas of improvement for both NG and CW. So kudos to NG for following up.
  • Hello Legendsingray,

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. I have the executive team at National General looking into this for you. You should be receiving a call soon. Thank you and take care!

  • Good Sam sent me a letter asking me to call them for a quote. Having never heard of National General Insurance I declined to move my policy from Progressive even though the National General quote was lower than what I am paying now. Seeing that you are being jerked around makes me think I made the right decision.
  • His insurance? HA! Of 50,000 cars on 501 in Conway, SC. The one that hit me had NO INSURANCE!
  • OK. So far I'm a bit displeased. At this point I'm not sure if its Camping World (NG's "preferred" repair facility) or the possibly India based claims agent who struggles with the English language. But I'm sure the TT is totaled as it has frame and water damage inside along with cosmetic and other damage (leaking water heater, broken awning etc) and the NADA shows TT is only worth about $7100 anyway.
Anyway, someone seems to be dragging their feet and Camping World is blaming NG for not returning calls and NG is blaming Camping World for not following directions to report the claim.
Ugh...I am beginning to see the need to become a P.I.T.A. to speed up the process.
I wish Liberty Mutual had good RV insurance....my truck is scheduled to be fixed this week and they have called me several times making sure I'm happy with the progress of the claim.
  • Wouldn't it work the same as a car? If insurance totals it, they pay you book value for the TT. You do what you want with it (fix it, scrap it, etc) but if you decide to fix it, you'll make up the difference out of pocket. You might also have a salvage title at that point.
  • Do you know what their threshold is for totaling one? I really don't want it totaled, I'd much rather have it fixed. It's a unique TT and works great for my family.
  • Have had them for several years. Posted two claims with them and had no problems. One claim was for a blown tire damage and one for a parking lot scrape up. No problem with either.
