- Dutch_12078Explorer IIGiven that it's a railroad bridge, the options for raising it are very limited, and tightly controlled at the federal level. Lowering the roadway may be a more viable option if the bridge construction allows it. With an average of about eight relatively minor property damage accidents per year, spending millions to correct it could be a hard sell. One low cost option might be to lower the overhead warning signs to the same height as the bridge, making them serve as a more noticeable alert.

It is my opinion that if there are repeated incidents of vehicles hitting the bridge that there is a problem with the civil engineering of the intersection.

No quarter given for the fact that the bridge has been there since long before vehicles got so tall, eh?- Bionic_ManExplorer

I'll answer that. At the top of the Eisenhower tunnel, there is a stop light that activates when a vehicle is too tall to safely pass through. Same thing could be used here.
Is it your opinion that folks too blind to see big flashing yellow lights adjacent to gigantic warning signs are going to notice a stop light?
And anyway, as I understand it there's a lot more to the Eisenhower's warning system, including a full-time live attendant at both ends.

I can sort of understand those rentals. rent a truck for the first time, don't think to ask exactly how tall it is, etc. but a professional driver would be different.
bumpy - wny_pat1ExplorerAt least the one I hit didn't have flashing yellow lights!!! Not that it would have been a excuse. Warning sign are all that are required by law! You hit it and you buy it and still pay the fine.

with two signs and a blinking yellow light, as old whats his name sez, you can't fix stupid.
I hope those rentals paid for the extra insurance.

This guy had all the rental insurance he could get and he said it doesn't cover front cap, roof, and bottom.
he said he had insurance but it didn't cover it. I wonder if this is normal or if you can get full comprehensive for a rental. It may be written different for a RV than a car/truck.

Clearly that bridge is on a major traffic route. They either have to build a higher bridge or have special height warning devices. A simple sign is not enough.

Watch the videos....well-signed, blinking warning lights- what else do you want?
And remember The Universal Rule of Trying-to-Fix-Stupid:

Or, if it really is a major traffic route as it appears, raise the bridge. If there are that many collisions at that location, there needs to be a re-evaluation of the intersection.
All of these accidents are surly causing the city $$ as well. moisheh wrote:

X2. I am all about personal responsibility but if there are that many people hitting the bridge it is time for the municipality to re-evaluate the bridge.
