2005 Winni Adventurer Chassis Differences

I was looking at a couple of motorhomes this week. Both were 2005 Winnegabo Adventurers. One was a 37B 37 foot with 3 slides, workhorse chassis, 22.5" tires, it had opposing rear slides, 44k miles. The other was and Adventurer 35 foot with a Ford Chassis, 19" tires, 2 slides, 35k miles, I don't remember the model number. Comparing the two is one appreciably better as far as durability, handling etc? We like the floor plan of both but favored the 37B. The 37B was priced 18,000 more. Someone just posted on this or another forum that their workhorse 8.1 just blew a hole in the top of a piston at 44 k miles. Gives me pause.

  • In 2005 at Winnebago a Workhorse chassis was an extra-cost upgrade for several smaller gas models, and the only chassis offered for the larger, heavier gassers.

The F-53 had several GVWR options, only the lower ratings had 19 inch wheels. I might be concerned that the 35-footer might be pushing the chassis capacity. Check the GVWR on that example. However, if you plan on towing, Ford will have a GCWR of at least 26,000 pounds. But so will the Workhorse if it is a W-22.

Without knowing how each model drive tran condition is if you believe both have a good drive tran than I would go with the Workhorse.

My reason is because of the year 2005, Workhorse had a little more HP, more Torque and the Allison transmission, Ford did not get better Hp or Torque and the 5 speed till 2006 chassis models and newer.

When I was looking for my new to me motorhome I stuck to it being on the better chassis for the year so I bought a 08 Bounder with the Ford chassis because the Ford had a better chassis/trans/hp in 2006 and newer, but I also knew if I went older than it was going to be the Workhorse.
  • We had an Adventurer 35B (34'11")on the 20,500 Ford and then the Suncruiser 37B (37'11") (same as the Adventurer) on the Workhorse W22. We liked both but DW loved the bedroom in the 37B. We crossed the USA many times with each. With the 37B we watched how much we loaded into it. We put 63,000+ miles on the 37B with no problems. After we traded in the dealer sold it in 2011 for about $40,000.
I would not worry about which chassis; they are both fine. Buy the house you like.

    I was told that it's the W22

  • Blowing out and engine or transmission could happen to either. I happens. For the two models you are looking at first choice would be floor plan then chassis. Either will get you to you're favorite camp ground.

If you want to drill down into the chassis the Workhorse version has the advantage with a bit more horse power, a five speed transmission and maybe 2000 lbs. increase in GVWR over the Ford depending on the chassis version. 22.5 tires are a bonus.

I wouldn't concern myself to much regarding the end of production for the Workhorse. Parts will be available long after the house side of the coach has turned to dust. GM built a lot of Vortec 8.1L engines. Same for Allison with the transmission. Production ended on the Ford 351 Cleveland engine in the early 1980's but it's not hard almost 40 years later to find any item for it.

The workhorse is no longer in production. The Ford is.
