Advice For Buying an RV Extended Warranty

Hello,

I've been reading the forum for about a year now and have just pruchased my first Diesel motorhome this week.

Based upon what I have read in the past, I was all set on getting my extended warranty from WholesaleWarranties.com and getting the Xtra Ride policy from Protective. I thought by doing my homework, once I got the RV this would be a done deal.

Now I find out that Protective dropped Wholesale Warranties, SO, my question is this: If they are both such great companies - why did they part ways? And more importantly, should I stay with Wholesale or should I stay with Xtra Ride? It seems like Xtra Ride is who I am actually doing business with (wholesale is just a middleman here) so that is probably the right choice.

I would appreciate any input from fellow motorhome owners - preferably those that have experienced Diesel repairs with you warranty company.

Thanks!

Shaun

  • The extended warranty company that I had (FCPP) insisted on using second-hand parts to do repairs. For example, I needed the ECM replaced ($1150). They found a used one from a wreck for $75.00. Said if I wanted a new one, I would have to pay the difference! Read the contract fine print very carefully! I wouldn't recommend wasting your money on these scams. As mentioned, start a rainy day fund, and go that route.
  • What year, engine, mfg of motorhome did you buy? Diesels are known to go on and on..... We've been full-timing for 17 years and meet a lot of folks throughout the country. We've never heard of anyone blowing their engine if that's what you're afraid of, so obviously it doesn't happen very often. Personally, just put that money aside and save it for any repairs, IF needed. Keep up with your maintenance and give it TLC and you will have a good one! Happy RVing!
  • For me No! For all the people that I have met, most with warranties outside of the OEM probably never needed it. I do know of 2 cases it paid well for them. However, I've heard many that did not get whet they bargained for. For me, I've not gone for any extended coverage, including Best Buy stuff. I'm way ahead. If it breaks now, I'm still happy.:@
  • On my Performance Care contract purchased from Wholesale Warranties I have the following optional coverages:

Optional Non-Covered Part Cause of Loss: In the event a breakdown occurs on a covered part under the service contract due to the failure of a non-covered part, the covered part will be repaired (as an exception to the standard exclusion).

Optional Covered Part Cause of Loss: The non-covered part will be repaired (as an exception to the standard exclusion).

It might be worth calling them and asking if this is something they still offer.
  • "Danger, Will Robinson!" They have to fix what they can't figure out how to deny and still make a profit, up front, on the contract. Unless you're the one guy in a thousand that has a real lemon of a motorhome, you're going to lose big time. You're better off starting a repair fund and contributing to it monthly so you have ready funds to pay for repairs.
  • In a nut shell it is not a warranty it is a service contract.

If a covered part damages a non covered part the non covered part is not covered and if a non covered part damages a covered part neither part is covered” Sounds like a Chicken Ad doesn’t it. Well I discover the fan is covered and that is $225.00 and in order to replace the fan you have to remove the radiator, the Charge Air Cooler, and other stuff for access. Radiator is not covered but the cooling system is so go figure. So they finally agree to cover 8 hours of labor at $100.00/hour.

  • 1. I applaud you for thoroughly studying these "warranties" before buying.
    2. This topic has been discussed so much that you will find literally hundreds of pages to read by using the search at the top of every page.
    3. Extended "warranties" are really insurance policies that are very carefully written to exclude many common repairs. You should read the policy, not the sales brochure.
    4. You should never buy insurance to cover anything you can afford to replace. Therefore, if you can afford a typical repair, you should not buy a policy.
    5. These extended "warranty" companies, not being regulated, often conveniently go out of business after collecting lots of premium money without paying out many claims.
  • if they say they don't cover units used for full timing, why do you think this will not apply to you. It seems to me that that assortment of exclusions/loopholes, restrictions, conditions etc. makes the coverage essentially useless.
    bumpy
  • Here are some of the things from the Wholesale Warranties Contract that concern me:

I would appreciate the groups help on whether or not these should be concerns/ - On this one- I bought a used RV and dont have the records. Will that be a problem? also, does this mean you cant do your own maintenance with wholesale warranties plan?

    A. MAINTENANCE AND RECORDS

To obtain the benefits provided by this Service Contract, You are required to provide maintenance to Covered Components at a Licensed Repair Facility prroper documentation and verifiable receipts for all maintenance and repairs will be required in the event
of a claim. Receipts must reflect Your name, proper RV documentation (i.e. year, make, and model), complete VIN/Serial number, and the current mileage of the RV Handwritten receipts will not be accepted. Failure to provide proof of required maintenance may result in denial of coverage.

    E. WHAT IS NOT COVERED

Any overheating, regardless of (what if the water pump goes out)
    the cause of overheating

Any expenses that are associated with shop supplies, materials charges, hazardous waste charges, diagnosis time (isnt there always dianostic time billed)

RVs used as a permanent residence (is this for real)

    21. The repair or replacement of any Covered Component that has been damaged by a non-Covered Component or from an improper repair.
    22. The repair or replacement of any non-Covered Component damaged as a result of the Failure of a Covered Component. (WTH?)

    23. Repairs or replacements made outside the contiguous United States ( does this mean no coverage in Canada?)

thanks again for input and advice on this situation! I was really sold on the xtra ride plan but this ProCare leaves me wondering.
  • Here is my concern now with wholesale warranties:

From what I have been reading from everyone here - I definately want exclusionary coverage and I definately want the consequential damage coverage. Now that they now longer have xtra ride, they want me to buy a plan called procare, which has neither of those items.

It actually lists as exclusions "covered items damaging non-covered items" and "non-covered items damaging covered items" BOTH as exclusions! That almost seems like a joke after what I have been reading for the last year here.

Also I have a question about FULL-Time RV living. I plan to possibly plan to live on our coach full-time after this year if we like it and the Procare policy from wholesale warranties also sepecifiaclly excludes any claims if you live in the RV full-time.

HAve any of you experienced this as a problem or is it just one of those things in a contract you have to live with? I would hate to blow my engine and get a bill for $20K because I have been living in my motorhome.

    Thanks,

    Shaun
