Bilstein steering damper, Pro/Con

I would like to hear from anyone that has installed the Bilstein.
I had one to put on and the alignment shop said that it would cause problems, and not self center, or give blowout protection.
He also said it would cause the steering to pull to one side.
Seems strange to me.
What has been your experience?
Is there a better option?
Don't want to install something that will cause problems.

Thanks in advance,
Chuck
  • Thanks guys, have appointment to have it installed!! Thanks, Olddoggy, for your reply.

  • I put it on my 2004 F53 Hurricane 30Q last year. Like driving a different truck after installation. Tracks true and straight, would recomend if you don't have it.

  • A standard steering stabilizer will not help to center, it's only purpose is to dampen jolts in the pavement from getting to the components and the driver. Nor will it damage anything, don't care what the tech says.
  • I've had several over the years. Never a problem. Always self centering and no pulling. Tires and wheels always ran true and no alignment problems. Don't know what you have, but mine were all p-series chassis.

  • I never had a problem when I put a Bilstein steering damper on my Class A.

That said if you want self centering and blow out protection then I would go with a Steer Safe this will do that.

From experience I can tell you that blowing a front tire at speed is no fun but with the Steer Safe I was able to easily control the RV and make a safe stop.

I tested it on a 18 wheeler and after seeing how well it worked in a blow out I put them on my RV.
  • This is the alignment shop used by all the RV, large truck, shops in this area.
I think it is just one person with something to say.
I know it is a good product.
I just would like to hear from a person, that has first hand experience.

  • The caster in your front knuckles should make the steering self-center when you're going down the road.
  • If set up properly, no steering damper should pull to the side. They do make steering dampers that are adjustable from the driver's seat. The Blue OX Tru-Center has that feature but it is not the least expensive steering damper out there.
