Chevy 350 V8 Big Enough engine?

Hi folks.. my 1st post here.

My wife and I and 5 kids are thinking of buying a 22-25ft class C motorhome. We are buying used (under $30k).

The main purpose of this unit will be to travel in comfort not to sleep in. We are planning a spring break trip to Florida this spring. We will drive in the motorhome and sleep at the resort or hotels.

We found a cream puff 03' Coachman freedom 25ft with 26000 miles with a Chevy 350V8. My dad tells me it's a little less desirable because most people are wanting the get up and go of a 400? 454? So the engine is great quality but not real quick. But he also said it's a good engine and I should get better gas milage.

My main concern is freeway speed. If there are 7 of us traveling in this unit with luggage will we be able to travel at reasonable freeway speeds (say 70mph or so) or will we be stuck at 55 or 60 with a line of traffic climbing all over us?

Thanks in advance for anyone willing to give some advice.
  • I loved the 350 v8 I drove in my youth, a Corvette LT1 installed in a Chevrolet Caprice sedan. 100 mph+ easy on I-75 between Oakland County and Flint.

Sorry, not a class c ... Just nostalgic.
  • My only experience with a Class C is a weekend rental and a few hundred miles of driving so consider that perspective in my opinion - For travel in comfort, I would rate a Suburban or conversion van much higher than a C.
  • You can plan on getting down into first gear on 6% or greater grades. That means you'll be doing about 22 to 25MPH. You'll be able to feed the squirrels as they run alongside your Class C.

It's actually not too bad... Just don't pay attention to the other RVs that will be passing you at 65 to 70 MPH.

We traveled for 16 years with a 350 v8 powering our 25 foot RV.

By the way we averaged 6 MPG.
  • You should not have any problem running 65-75 MPH with that rig fully loaded,my '06 Chevy 28 foot RV fully loaded does just fine at those speeds. I can keep with traffic in most any terrain.

My fuel mileage is a bit better than the RVs on a Ford Chassis. My numbers run between 8.7 to 9.2mpg depending on speed and terrain, the sweet spot seems to be at about 64 MPH

The nice thing about the RV on a Chevy Chassis is that it will have a better ride and a lot more room in the cockpit area making it more enjoyable for long rides.
  • My rig is 29ft and we travel with 2 adults and two dogs. The rig has a 460 which handles things OK. 7 people in any RV is a stretch - major stretch in 25ft rig. If it were me I would take a pass. Weight is a big deal in my rig - suspect it would be a big deal in yours.
