Engine running rough (1999 Ford V10)

My engine started running rough a few months ago and seems to be missing when calling for power, ie. pulling away from a stop and climbing hills, it will down shift and the tack goes way up to 3000 plus, it never did that before on a normal climb. I took it to a Ford dealer, they determined I got some bad gas, changed my fuel filter and their scan said I had a lot of miss fires due to water in gas. They recommended that I put lots of methal hydrate in the gas tank to get rid of the water. I have been doing that now for the last 1000 plus miles or so and it does not appear to be any better.

I believe there has been a water issue because I took of the air filter and it was soaked with water, there was even about 1/2 cup of water in the bottom of the cone of the filter. Bought a new one and put it in, still the same. Adding fuel injector cleaner whenever I get gas as well and no change.

Anybody have any suggestions? I was at Ford Dealer to get an oil change in June, and check things over. They came back and told me my engine was blown, for $6200 plus $6000 labour and 2 weeks of my vacation time, they could have me back on the road, btw that cost me $380, and they didn't change my oil. The engine has 168,000 kilometers and never had a problem before this water got in it.

Your thoughts please
Thank

  • not cheap but way cheaper than a new engine he doesn't need.

change the plugs. Do it now. Most motorhomes, you can extend the front levelers far enough to get the wheels off the ground, jackstands under the frame, pull the front wheel and get all the access you need.

Pull the oils, change the sparkplugs. Look closely for any evidence of misfire, carbon tracks and such.

Run her for a while, check codes if you still have problems, and then look at particular coils depending on which cylinders are misfiring on the code reader
  • First you need to find a competent Ford dealer to properly diagnose the problem. Most likey it is connected to the COP's and/or spark plugs. Have the spark plugs ever been changed? If not it is past due. New plugs and COP's won't be cheap either BTW.

How long since plugs were checked ?

Are the misfire on scans staying mostly on same cylinders or changing from one to another?

I found alot of these motor would get waater in recess where spark plugs are shorting out coil packs.

Yup, had the problem of water/antifreeze in several spark plug recesses. Seems that one of the coolant lines that ran over the engine had a leak when accelerating. The mechanic that finally found the problem showed me the "high water" lines. Put on a real clamp and the problem went away. Changed the plugs at the same time.
  • my check engine light does not come on, I know it works , it comes on when the key is first turned on, so I know the bulb is ok. The mod kit for the air filter to prevent water was installed in 2000 shortly after I bought the MH. Done at my local Ford dealership.
You guys got me interested in this coil pack you mentioned, some one in a campground in Florida mentioned that to me last year, he asked me if I ever had any go bad, his v10 had to have 2 replaced since he had it, but I never had anything done in that area since I bought the MH. I bought it new in 1999 and the plugs have never been changed not any coil packs. I was planning to get that done this winter when I get back down south, but not at the dealership who told me my engine was shot.

I think they knew that I had 3 weeks to get back to Canada and I would jump at anything they said, so they may have thought that here is a good chance to sell an new engine.

I just hope it makes it back to Florida in December, thank heavens for road side assistance
  • have you installed the "snorkel" on the air intake so that it does not pull in water off the road? if not, that will suck road water up into the air filter exactly as you described.
I didnt buy the snorkel when the cure was first announced in a RSB? and waited a couple of years and the price doubled. when I traded it off, the unmounted snorkel was in a dinette drawer. that was on the 1999 Ford V10 chassis under my chieftain. mine died once on the ocean access road on the Florida panhandle during a monsoon. managed to limp into my campground and once dried out, no further problems.

  • I also had a bad coil pack on a 5.4L V8 work van, 2002 E-250 with about 180,000 miles on it. A week later, the same coil pack started misfiring, and I took it in to find it was the same one that failed twice, and found a leaking coolant line spraying onto the coil pack.

I can not understand why you might have water in the intake system. That might have been the source of the "Bad Fuel" and water into the intake system. Yet I don't know where the water came from. Was it coolant? Could it have been rain?

Some intake systems are letting in to much rain water, it should not be letting in any rain.

So what I realy don't understand - you DROVE into the Ford dealer with a "Bad" engine? I wonder how that works? You have me really courious now.

I would probably be the type to buy a used engine at a junkyard from a wrecked truck, and put that into your motorhome, finding a company that might install it for a much more reasonable labor charge.

You might even price a new "Crate" motor from another Ford dealership, to see what a replacement engine for a F-250 pickup of your model year might cost.

  • Water in your gas tank and your air filter, where have you been parking the motorhome to get that much water in both places, sounds like you should drain the gas tank and put in new fresh gas, replace the spark plugs and than see what it does.
  • Is the check engine light on? If so check codes. Off the top of my head I would look for a loose spark plug, bad C.O.P. (coil on plug) There was a water ingestion problem with the V-10 air intake and many people moved the intake up higher. As I recall there was a Ford retro-fit air intake available. I hope this helps some, Bill
