Ford 5 Speed 5R110W Trans Service Question

So I drained the trans fluid from the pan by the plug provided by Ford and refilled to 4.5 quarts and drove around and checked and it showed no trans fluid on dipstick so I added another 1/2 quart and drove around and the very hard to read dipstick still shows no fluid I did get a reading at 1st when I replace the trans fluid but nothing now.

So does anyone know how many quarts the transmission pan holds, I did not remove the pan just drained the pan and refilled.

I thought it was 4 1/2 quarts but I could be wrong.

After you filled the pan cold and then drove the vehicle, some of the fluid in the pan filled air pockets in clutch packs, servos, internal galleries, torque converter, coolers, etc. As previously stated, refill what you removed and you'll be close. Keep filling the pan 1/2 a quart at a time until almost full and you'll be fine. (check level when hot) Don't overfill and leave room for fluid expansion if filling cold. The fluid level will rise on the stick as the ATF warms up.

Check your manual, that seems way low.
I just looked and got numbers ranging from 16.5 to 20 depending on exact year.

I did not flush the whole transmission, just drained from the pan and refilled, I had it flushed 2 1/2 years ago, just removing some of the fluid and refilling, plan on doing it again since I have 12 quarts but I cant remember what the pan itself holds, my oil drain pan holds only 7 quarts so it did not over fill.

Its 8 quarts in the pan. Those trans have internal t stats so flushes are difficult.

You should of known how many quarts by what you removed....

Well I still have the old fluid in the drain pan, I thought it only holds 7 quarts but I could be wrong and it is almost full, I guess I could pour it out in the empty quart bottles and see what I did drain, its going to be messy but at least I will know the amount.

    Thanks
  • If your drain pan was empty, measure what you caught, and match the amount going back.
Torque convertor and cooler hopefully didnt drain.
