How to install a new rearview camera?

I'm trying to replace my old black and white backup camera with a new color camera. Of course, the cables and connectors don't match.

The camera cable goes into a bundle that goes overhead, so I can't pull the new cable through to the back using the old cable.

Is it better to try to run wires under the RV, through the basement, run the cable along the outside top (held down the silicon sealant) or send the camera back and get a wireless one?

Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

  • When I changed mine (in a 1999 Fleetwood pace arrow) I was able to drop the new cable (with a weight attached) down thru the hole, and it came out the bottom.
Then routed it forward along the frame, up in front of the firewall, through the firewall and under the inside windshield trim.

I also adapted the housing for the original giant b/w crt monitor to fit the new smaller lcd color monitor inside. Looked factory original.
  • If you check on the various websites you will find adapters for all of the old camera cables. I changed out an old Jensen BW camera assembly with a Voyager color camera and monitor. I used my old cable from front to rear and just used the new adapters. Contact RV Cams, Inc, and they can supply you with the camera and adapters.
  • Getting the adapters is the best idea. If you can't get adapters, then cut, splice, and solder so you can use the old cable.

Running a new cable is not technically difficult, but you'll do a lot of slithering along on your back and you'll get dirty.

If you have to run new cable, use the method outlined by Jim M above, route the new cable down the back cap, along the frame rail, and back up into the cab area. Be sure to avoid high heat areas, and protect from rubbing through the insulation due to vibration.

A few lucky RV'rs have found an open conduit along the frame rail that could be used. I wasn't that lucky.

    Enjoy your new camera/monitor.

  • I have an 89 monaco and had an intec camera and moniter. I called them and the had a kit to use the existing cable and plug into the ends. New color screen and camara. You might check as to what your connections are, some are RCA jacks others Moldex. I would try and use existing wiring instead of creating the wheel again

  • Thanks everyone for the helpful advice.

I ended up using the existing cable and I cut the connectors off of each end of the new and the old cable and soldered the new connectors onto the old cable.

The new cable was 5 conductor and the old one was only 4, but I found out that there was one wire in the new cable that I didn't need. It was for switching between the front and back view and since the camera was always going to be facing the back, I would never need to switch so I wouldn't need that wire.

Bottom line, everything works great now. It's so much better having a color camera and monitor and the new one has the grid lines showing the 3ft, 2ft, 1ft and zero areas.

I wired it into the parking light instead of the backup lights. Now I can turn on the parking lights and see the toad if I want to check it.

Again, thanks to everyone for the help.

  • A friend had a clever idea. He installed a mirror avove the rear window at a 45-degree angle, then positioned a computer-compatible wi-fi camera on the wall looking up at the mirror. He then used his lap-top computer on the top of the dashboard to look at the wi-fi picture. Since the camera was looking into a morror, the typical right/left issues were by-passed. Best thing was, nothing in the system had to be weather-proof.

On my GT, there's a monohrome camera outside, and a monitor on the dash. Monochrome is fine for me - I don't need to know the color of the car following me.
