Hydraulic leveler not working

This is my second post about problems with my new RV. It's a '92 Fleetwood TIOGA Arrow and the right rear leveler will extend but will not swing down into place before extending. I see a broken braided wire and a clamp that appears to be broken as well. If anyone can give me a direction on how to fix this problem I would appreciate it as we are headed to the NASCAR races in Ft. Worth this weekend and it would be nice to know I can level the rig.

Thanks in advance,
Jake

  • Short answer - the easiest thing to do is remove the jack, box it up, and ship it to HWH to be rebuilt/repaired.

Longer Answer - HWH will treat you fairly and do the job right. Local hydraulic shops might not have access to the parts needed and they don't have the experience to do it correctly and quickly the first time.

If you are handy and think you just need parts (like that braided cable), call these guys: http://www.rvleveling.com/contact-stuarts-service.html

For DIY, you need to figure out the model and find the technical docs on the HWH website. If your jacks are similar to my 2004 vintage, extending but not kicking down could be an actuator problem or a broken cable - I've had both issues.

You will probably get more detailed suggestions with a model # and maybe some pictures.
  • jerry, check the roller bearing at the top left corner of the jack. it has to turn free for the jack to pivot.
spray it with wd 40 or some type of penetrating oil and loosen it with a pair of pliers. download a service manual at www.hwh.com. it covers this repair.
the manual says use wd40, not silicone. sorry, but hwh does not recommend silicone...
please feel free to call me at 602-549-3638 if you need help. i work for hwh.

We've had two different sets of HWH "kick down" levelers. The first set was supposed to kick down as they extended, based on a spring arrangement. The second set has an extra small ram on the side of the main one, to help it kick. Both sets have had problems. Lubing the pivot/linkage helps. Lubing the piston and seal area seems to also. HWH recommends using Silicone Spray near the hydraulic parts.
  • I have had issues with my levelers as well. What I found to be the best help was to go directly to the manufacturer. My system is Power Gear and luckily, they were recently purchased by Lippert Components, Inc. The customer service has become much better (primarily due to more employees on staff)

Power Gear has always been helpful with technical bulletins and assisting with trouble shooting help. Many manufacturers are very helpful because they want the buying public to continue to buy their products.

Start by figuring out the manufacturer, the model # to include part numbers and serial numbers, then contact them for troubleshooting assistance. Good luck

Not sure but I would guess that the levelers are aftermarket. Do you have a manufacture name for the jacks?
