New CRV toad

Have posted several times lately ref finding a tow vehicle to go with the class c we bought in Feb. I would like to thank all of you who gave so much knowledgeable and interesting advice. I read it all with great interest and it helped me decide on a 2013 CRV which I bought yesterday. Now I will start throwing out the dumb questions that come to mind and rely on your expertise.

Lets say you do all the towing preps in the morning that the manual calls for and you hit the open road. A few hundred miles, or several hours later you decide to stop, walk the dogs, make a sandwich and kick back for an hour or so. 1. do you leave the ignition turned to the towing position while stopped, or turn it off? 2. When you start out again do you have to do the towing preps again, or can you just fire up the rv and head out for the rest of the day, assuming of course you put the ignition back to the towing position.

Thanks
  • It's good to get in the habit to turn it off and recycle at lunch or for breaks rather than forget and leave it on all night. Done that a few times. I think it says to do it every eight hours. We rarely drive more than six. I had battery issues a few times when towing several days straight and not recharging. It also brings out the worst of a 3-4 year old battery.

It's not a if deal to get in and do the procedure.

If you do turn it off for a break just don't forget to redo it.
  • We just leave it, when stopping to eat. But maybe we shouldn't. I'm looking forward to the answers. I remember it saying after eight hours of towing to run the engine and go thru the shifting procedure again (I think that is without turning off the fuse, though. We always disengage the fuse.)

We have a 2012 CRV. We had a fuse on/off switch installed and have a Roadmaster Falcon Towbar with iRV2 brake.

I have bonded with the CRV and like it now. I went through my minivan withdrawl at first. :-)
  • Since it is my job to pay attention to the car when on a trip (hubby does the motorhome) when we stop I put it back in park, start the engine and let it run several minutes then go thru the gears like the manual says then we hit the road again.

To my knowledge it wont be in the manual. From my research Honda stopped stating that CRV can be towed 4 down in 2006. To my understanding they can still be and are being towed 4 down following the procedure that Honda outlined in the owners manuals prior to 2006/2007. The general thought is that Honda was paying to much in warranty claims from people not following proper procedure.
  • It is in the CRV owners manual for the 12,13and 14 models, pages 235 or 236. We cycle ours before starting in morning and again at lunch. The key is left in the car, with doors locked by a spare key.
We do not remove the fuse (or have a fuse disconnect switch, but have installed a charge line from the MH, through the umbilical cord, keeps the tiny CVR battery fully charged.

You might be thinking of the Element. Honda dropped approval for it in 06 but it is the same drive train as the CRV. My 09 CRV had it in the manual.

I now tow an 11 Element.
  • We tow a Honda Fit.

If we stop for a short restroom break (20 minutes or less) I don't touch anything in the car.

We usually take our lunch break after 5 to 6 hours of driving so at that point I turn off the key, put it in park, and go through the pre-towing procedure again.

However I don't do any of that until after we eat lunch and are ready to leave. My fear is that if I turn the ignition off and put it into park immediately upon arrival at the rest area I might pull away from the rest area with the car in park after lunch.

What I am unclear about is the need to re-insert the fuse before re-doing the pre-towing procedure. I don't bother pulling it for shorter trips (less than 8 hours) as I have never had an issue then. I have experienced a dead battery on the third day of three straight days of 8 plus hours of driving.
The instructions say to not remove the fuse until AFTER completing the pre-towing procedure. So does that mean when I stop for lunch and want to re-do the pre-towing procedure I need to re-insert the fuse, do the pre-towing procedure, and then remove the fuse again?
  • I have the same concern. There have been times when we have mistakenly hit the fuse disconnect switch. We notice it as we are driving, when we go to turn on the radio, and it won't work. We just flip the switch to drive. Does that hurt anything?
We haven't noticed, but what do we know? :-)
