Conservative annual cost of owning a MH getting 7 mpg @ $3.75 / gal for 5000 mi, 50 nights
Depreciation $10000
Gas $2680
CG fees $1000
Maintenance and repairs $1000
Total 14680

The cost difference from best mpg to worst is about $30 per night. For some, this number matters. Others don't mind. Good mpg or not - choosing to drive a MH is the most significant decision.
Depreciation may be lower but then maintenance and repair tends to creep up. Depreciation can be many times higher, at which point gas becomes in significant. - mustang652Explorer

Traveylin makes the point that I reckon is always in the back of my mind when I read and post to threads involving "MPH". It's really about the journey and the many people I have had the privilege to meet along the way. Back in '88 when my micro C was getting up to 18 mpg and I was paying less than $2 per gallon, I figured my mph like it really counted. I did the figures and moaned I only got 13 mph while bucking a head wind, pitch the figures, fill the tank and start planning the next trip. - fourmatExploreraverage 8 in 15,000 miles
- traveylinExplorer6-8 miles per gallon can be looked at many different ways. The point of view I use is that its a lifestyle of leisure and could better be measured in gallons per week. That right! If your have a need to get between point a and b, maybe a plane train or auto is more effective, than a home on wheels. Our travel profile with the class a to motor across Texas quickly as it is hot, and get to the high country in the south west where we will change location only once a week and not more than a couple hundred miles. At that rate our continuing gas cost is 100$per week which is sustainable. Next year we will go to alaska about 11 thousand miles round trip at a cost of 6000$ in gas but only about 250 dollars per week. A cruise or nice resort can quickly outspend that in a week or two. Its a lifestyle not a track race...
- mustang652ExplorerI think that to ever seen 9, I'd have to be looking a a 6 while standing on my head.
- spotrotExplorer7.3 mpg over 35k miles. Surprisingly consistent hills or not. Never saw 9 mpg even on flat roads at slower speeds.
2008 30' no toad - Monaco_MontclaiExplorerWe have a v-10,we were wondering before we bought, bout the mpg too,so when we did buy new, hopeing our$$$would be we'll to some degree, I waz watching with a close eye on the mpg, have a 29ft, three slide ,made a trip or two, not towing, and my bride figured ,12.6,mpg, but that's new,a couple of k miles on the clock. Well that whent well,so found a need to do the towing thing, got toad that weights 3100, towing that we get 10mpg, and hopeing the mpg will get better, since the motor is not yet settled in yet, only 16 on the clock so far.but when in the work force(retired now)moved the 18wheelers around , so u caint ask but so much ,of heavy RV s. now I m use ing the e10 fuel too so , it could get better with non ethanol . Now it's all. -happy-camping

With a motorhome, I don't care about MPG. I just track cost - much more eye opening.
At today's gas price in NY, $1 takes me 2 miles. Makes you think twice about heading out for a bottle of milk.
Next to depreciation, gas is now our biggest expense. All-in, 50 nights of camping costs us about $250 per night.
Do the math folks. RV'ing may be fun but it isn't cheap.
Well ain't that the truth. Put wheels under a small condo loaded with goodies and drive it down the road, diesel or gas, its not going to be cheap. You can save a little on fuel with a Sprinter based B, but who wants to spend months living in a stretched out metal tent. I might gripe about the price of gas at the pump making some oil barron super rich, but the mpg of my boat or rv is the cost of traveling in relative luxury. The guy going cross country in a Prius is spending plenty on a decent hotel that might give him bed bugs, taking showers that somebody with who knows what is suffering from and eating all his meals in fast food junk or pricy joints. If you can't afford the fuel, find a cheaper hobby/lifestyle. - mena661Explorer

You won't lose the brakes in a newer gas chassis. I do nothing but mountains. I live in a valley at 2500 feet. To get out of that valley I have to cross a minimum 4000 ft pass (the other two passes are a little higher). MH never goes below 50 mph and my foot is NOT to the floor either. 6 & 7% grades are common in my driving too. I still get 7.5 mpg.
See that the newer V10s don't don't do any better than my old HR with a Dodge 440 did. The big issue with it was not enough gears and the brakes in the mountains. Lost the brakes once. This is why I am considering a diesel Pusher. - dfhensleyExplorerSee that the newer V10s don't don't do any better than my old HR with a Dodge 440 did.
