Possible leveling jack issue and questions.

I got my new to me 2005 34' Expedition home yesterday. It was a 2.5 hour drive home with many grades in both directions. The coach handled good and braking was very good. That is the good the bad is when I got home I had evidence of coolant coming through the overflow tube but I monitored the temp and oil gauges constantly and it never over heated my son was following me home and called to say he saw the liquid coming from the coach on the grades. The guy told me he had the radiator flushed not long ago I am hoping it was just over filled.

Now to the leveling jacks when I got home I parked it on a fairly level area and dropped the air suspension like the guy showed me then turned on the Power Gear levelers and hit auto and sitting still in the coach I felt it level up and the center light turned green but the right and left yellow lights were flashing after the leveling procedure. I did this several times and it either had a down arrow yellow light flashing with the left arrow flashing when the center green light was on.

When I got out of the coach to look underneath the front jacks where not touching but the 2 rear jacks were completely down and the coach seemed level.

I read the manual on the jacks and it says the rear jacks do the leveling side to side the front jacks work in tandem for front to back leveling. Is it possible the front to back was level enough that it did not touch due to being level already front to back?

It was getting dark so I figure I will work with it more when I get home. The reservoir is full the manual say to within 1/4" of the top and it could be slightly lower than that but not much.

Thanks for anything you can add for me to check. I plan to try the manual procedure when I get home later this morning.

  • This is the correct procedure for your year/model semi auto Powergear jacks. The problem people have with calling LCI for tech support is, NOBODY from Powergear is still around after LCI purchased them, especially a system almost 15 years old. What those ****** told you is nonsense. Powergear built 2 systems back then. One system the front jacks were on separate solenoids and the 2nd system the front jacks were on 1 solenoid with a T to raise them together and equalize. Doug

    OPERATORS AND SERVICE
    MANUAL
    for
    SEMIAUTOMATIC
    RV SYSTEM

STEP 4 – Push the “Front” jack button until the front jacks contact the ground.
After the jacks contact the ground continue to depress the “Front” jack
    button for 13
seconds lifting the front of the coach off of the
suspension (not lifting the wheels off of the ground).
STEP 5 – Push the “Rear” jack button until the rear jacks contact the ground.
STEP 6 – Observe the “Front” and “Rear” orange electronic level LEDs (arrows).
Push and hold the corresponding button that has the LED on. The
controls will automatically stop the pump for 5 seconds once a front to rear
    level has been attained.
    STEP 7 Observe
the “Left” and “Right” orange electronic level LEDs (arrows).
Push and hold the corresponding button that has the LED on. The
controls will automatically stop the pump for 5 seconds once a side to side
    level has been attained.
NOTE (Step 6 and Step 7): If operator continues to push and hold the button
for more than 5 seconds after the LED has gone out the system will be overridden.
This will cause the pump motor to begin running again, which in turn will raise the
    coach.
    STEP 8 The
green “Power Gear Level” LED in the center should now be lit. Repeat
steps 6 and 7 if this is not the case.
  • I figured I should report back. After tinkering with this system for a couple hours and re calibrating it and talking to two techs from Power Gear. It is normal according to the second guy the older system don't care if all jacks are down it is just leveling the coach. The lights that are lit afterwards tell you the low points. He said the newer ones after leveling will test each jack to make sure they are down but the older models do not have that technology. He said the other jacks can be ran manually if you want the stability after leveling.

The first tech we talked to sent me an email with the procedure to re calibrated it because they had changed all the batteries recently and he thought it had lost the factory zero. My son and I re calibrated it about 6 or 7 times and it always did the same thing that is when I called back and talked to the second tech.

As for the coolant I am thinking they over filled the tank because it is setting in the normal level now.

I felt so good when I drove in with this thing yesterday and then I thought it had all these problems I am glad everything seems to be normal.

  • Hi again. I found this.
Not sure where to go from here. I’d probably reset it.

    Clicky

Just had another thought: can you run the fronts down in manual mode?
  • He said it was Power gear.

    Hello Gundog.

All jacks should be on the ground. When mine can’t level due to too uneven ground, the green center light blinks. Not sure that I have ever seen the yellow lights blink like that

Power gear has procedures and PDFs on resetting the system, recalibrating, etc.
Maybe you can find some joy there.

The coolant tank is visible from the rear access door, upper right. Did you get a receipt for the coolant change? I hope he used extended life. You can buy SCA strips and check your coolant occasionally. The fact that the temp gauge never went up and it only spewed going up grade is encouraging.

Aren’t the exhaust brake and air brakes great?
  • Gundog,
You need to tell us what brand and model number of Jack system you have. For instance, ours is the HWH 625 Computer Controlled Automatic Leveling System. Then maybe someone with your same model number will chime in and help.

  • Mine has HWH system so I don’t know about your flashing lights.
If it seems level I would not worry about it.
