Shurflo water pump won't shut off..

Installed a new Shurflo water pump model 4008-101-A65 last month. (same brand/model I took out) It worked perfect after I installed it. We never used it until today. It won't shut off. It should build pressure then shut off but it sounds like it's just sitting there at an idle. When I run the water it works fine but then goes back to this idle mode instead of shutting off like it should. I have checked and rechecked and I don't have any leaks and none of the faucets where left on. There are two adjustment screws on top and I've tried adjusting them some but that changes nothing. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks
  • You either have a leak or the pressure switch is is not connected or defective.
  • If you have an outside shower be sure the valves are both off and not on with the shutoff pushed?
  • I had a previous unit that used a pressure hose to fill the tank. If a certain valve was open, the tank filled, if it was closed the system pressurized from outside pressure.

If I left the valve in the fill position with the hose off, the pump would never reach pressure to shut off as the water would just recirculate. Maybe that is your problem?

If you have one of these winterizing setups like most of us have you can use this to test your pump... Fill the bottle with fresh water and switch it in place with the valve.

Now turn on the pump and see if it pumps the water into your system when you turn on a sink spigot etc. If it shuts down normal when you close the sink spigot here then this will tell you the problem is some air getting into the lines between your pump and the fresh water tank...

If it still comes on and just hums then you have a spigot somewhere between the pump and the lines inside the trailer not totally turning off...

  • I had that same problem and my issue was I had the valve for filling the fresh water tank while connected to city water open. Verify that that valve is closed.
  • Update - I found some info on what the two set screw adjustments are for. Still kind of confusing but I adjusted the switch set screw out a quarter turn and the pump stopped. Had my wife turn the water on and off several times while I watched the pump and it shut off every time. One is a switch adjustment and the other is pressure adjustment. What I read was these have to be set just right or the pump will not shut off. I'm sure I just got lucky but glad I didn't have to change it out again. Thanks everyone.
  • Before makin gany adjustments, take the head of the pump apart and rinse all the rubber parts off with water.
Every time I have had those symptoms it was just something the pump sucked up.
  • Sounds like your pump needs to be primed with some water. The pump may be sucking air. If it can't pull water from the tank it will keep running and not shut off.
Try taking a fitting loose to bleed the air out.
Works for me. Once you get water in the pump it will work OK and build up pressure and shut off.

(It sounds like it's just sitting there at an idle because it's pumping air not water)
  • when I installed my shurflow did the same thing took some time to get all the air out of pump after that it was fine
