Slide out problem - Please help

I have a Winnie Minnie 24F (year 2003). Our slide out had been working well until this weekend. When I push the ¨IN¨ button, only 1 side would move in . The right side of the side (behind the driver) would not move. A friend was able to push with it in his own hands. When I push the button to move the slide out, BOTH sides would move out normally.

Do you know what I need to do ? Also, is it safe to manually push the slide in by hands ? The manual mentioned about hand crank but it does not say anything about pushing the slide in by force (hands).

thanks

  • Thank everyone for the replies. I planned to spend this weekend investigating and fixing the slide out. But I had no problems moving both arms today so I searched for the manual and found 4-pages manual.

Here is a quote from the manual."While in the Manual Mode, each of the two room slide arms can be activated by press the IN and the OUT buttons. One button will retract the front arm. The other button will retract the back arm". Both IN and OUT buttons may be held down at the same time to simultaneously activate both arms to retract the room".This mode could be used when both arms are out of sync.

I guess somehow the manual mode was activated last weekend. If I had press both the IN and OUT buttons, both arms would retract. Turning off the house power would reset the slide's system.

We also have a Minnie 24F and can confirm that the slide has two separate motor driven screws that move the slide in and out. The front one is easy to see by crawling underneath. We have never had an issue with the slide, so can't help with the OP's problem.

I would really appreciate a post from the OP describing the problem solution when it is found, just in case the same thing happens to us.

Probably a contact problem.....switch, controller, at motor.... seeing as it operates OK going back in.

Thank you all for your valuable information.

tatest , It is the Minnie 24F (I thought they were all called Winnie Minnie, but I was wrong). The slide out was made by Kwikee and I believe it has 2 arms.

Are there gear teeth on the underside of the arm?
If so then it does indeed sound exactly like a "shear pin" (a bolt as described above) has broken. Look underneath for a square metal tube that runs the width of the slide. There will be one of these bolts in each end and breakage is common.

  • I'm not finding the technical information for a model 24F in the Minnie Winnie series. I do find a 24F in the Minnie. That series was using Kwikee screw jack slideout mechanism, actuators and rams in the basement, below floor level.

I don't know if that slightly larger slideout has two rams like the 31C, or one ram. Looking under the open slide will tell you.

If it has two rams, the problem could be in the electronic controls to coordinate the pair of motors, or mechanical in one side. Since it is working ok going out, not likely a shear pin, but there is a torque-limiting clutch that releases at end of travel in both directions, it could be slipping in one direction of travel. I would expect to hear the clicking of the slipping clutch.

If only one ram, the problems is elsewhere. You've picked up a mechanical interference (floor, wipers, misalignment in the open) that makes one side drag a lot more than the other, so the slide is getting sideways. I'm not sure how they do an alignment on a slide supported and operated by a single big ram at the center, both of mine are still OK, or at least don't getmore than an inch or two out of square while moving.

Could be something a dealer needs to look at. For now, pushing to even it out should not hurt the mechanism.
  • Sounds more like a bad contact vs shear pin. IF shear pin was broken it wouldn't move back out OK.

But only guessing cause don't know what type of slide out system you have.
Motor driven on both sides of slide out?
    Cable driven?
    Hydraulic driven?
    Electric rack/drive gear driven?

Manual cranking really only works IF all mechanical mechanisms are intact and working......ie: motor quits
Pushing it in by hand should do no harm...provided it moves fairly easy by hand.
  • Sounds like you have a sheared pin on one side of the slide out motor. If like the ones we have on our Tiffin, a 2" 1/4-20 grade 8 bolt and a Nylock nut can correct until the proper "pin" can be obtained. An 10" adjustable wrench can be used to realign the motor shaft and drive tube or the drive shaft and drive gear at the other end of the shaft if not at the motor.
