Traveling late April

Doing a "try it" trip from Connecticut for a week. Any campgrounds open that early? Try it as in want to tour US, is an RV comfortable for a single retiree
  • Late April coincides with many schools April vacations. We would routinely head south towards Virginia, etc., from New England - always found open campgrounds. Shouldn't be an issue. ST
  • Guessing, not promising, that all campgrounds in FL would be open :)

I did not know that! We love that place, and go there almost every year. It is "rustic" camping - outhouses, and no water, electric, or dump station.

What do you mean by a "try it trip"? Did you get a new camper? Are you planning on renting a camper? Are you going north from Connecticut, or south?

Most campgrounds in Connecticut and New England don't open fully until Memorial Day (May). Some may be "dry" camping, no electric or water. Some may have electric only available, no water. Connecticut State park campgrounds aren't open until Memorial Day - the online reservation system may say "unavailable", leading some people to think all the sites are reserved, but in reality the campground is just not open yet. Having said that... some CT state parks are open the weekend before Memorial Day, but it is non-reservation, first come first serve.

One problem is contacting someone at the private campgrounds that may rent space during the off season - usually during the off season the "offices" are open randomly, when someone happens to swing by and check messages.

Start trying to contact campgrounds now, and be ready for dry camping.

Can be a lot of fun, though! I love camping in cooler weather!
  • Tulsa District COE campgrounds (Oklahoma and northern Texas) open April 1st, government funding permitting.

Most Oklahoma state parks are open year round. Many of our commercial RV parks are open year round, people actually snowbird here.

Campgrounds in northern Texas state parks tend to be open weekends in the winter, but as you get further south, they are open all week.

Mississippi state park campgrounds will be open in April, particularly from I-20 and south. This is also snowbirding territory.

I grew up in the Great Lakes region. Up there, I don't count on much of anything being open before the beginning of May, a lot of stuff doesn't open until Memorial Day weekend (which is already summer down here).

It is not so much about the weather, as it is about the availability of the volunteer (actually work-camper) help that makes these parks possible.
  • We are heading to Pymatuning State Park OH mid March, it is on the PA/OH border. For a test run of our new TT.

There is also Pymatuning State Park PA

    Both are open.
  • Don't know about New Your, but in Indiana, State Parks are open all year round, but water, bath houses, and dump stations are not available until April 1. Most private campgrounds open on April 1 in Indiana. By end of April, everything is open and water turned back on.
