Who Has Purchased A New MH Out Of State ?

Well since the potus and the gov of Ca seems to think that every illegal gets to have a drivers license in the state of Ca. My 2 week wait for an appointment to the DMV came up today.
I had the paper work from the business that sells direct with their $$ numbers on it. I handed it to the counter person and asked I am looking to purchase this vehicle from XYZ in IN. here is their build up sheet with specs and price , I need to know what my registration fees would be on it.
The person looked it over and without a second breath said we have no way of telling you ! , When you are purchasing it we type in all the info and that's the last step before it prints out.I asked can they do that and show me what it would be and NOT push the print out button, NOPE...
Well can you at least get me in the ballpark on the fees ? NOPE !

So that went over like a lead balloon now didn't it !!

I had a set amount of money to do all this, since I can't get a straight answer from my own state DMV I'm not going to go blindly at it..

I've since bought a used 2005 MH and that will get us by till I can save up so I know I can cover whatever they decide to charge for the fees..

I bought from RvDirect. Took delivery in Iowa and I live i Illinois. RvDirect requires payment when the MH is ready to ship from factory. I sent them a check. They FedExed back the next day a completed Bill of Sale and Manufactuers Titles (chassis and coach). I took them to my Secretary of State, paid sales tax, title and registration fees and received plates. Drove to Iowa and picked it up 7 days later with my plates. No problems.

Have also purchased a car in Missouri to register in Illinois. Received paperwork from dealer and paid $5 for a Missouri temp tag. Went to my Sec. of State and paid sales tax and fees and got plates. Illinois does not allow other states to collect their sales tax. They just require a Bill of Sale.

If financing, it can be figured into deal and check written back to you for taxes.

OTD price means the price it takes to get you Out The Door. As far as they are concerned, registration fees are not included in the OTD price. They can't charge you the registration fees since they are not involved with the registration process.

It seems unreasonable to expect a dealer to be required to know what the registration fees are of all 50 states. The dealer gave you what you asked for.

NO they didn't !
If a place is going to only do business by selling factory direct with NO dealerships in said 50 states , Then YES I feel it is reasonable to expect them to know the registration fees .
If not then they need to say that up front which neither did !
NOT try to slide it by like they tried to do !

I point blank spelled out my offer of $$$ to INCLUDE EVERYTHING initial price of MH ,Doc Fees, Tax, Registration, AND ANYTHING they want to try add on ; be it windshield washer fluid , to fuel in the tank . I don't care how they wrote it up on paper EVERYTHING mentioned for $$$ set price that I offered and it was excepted.
Then to come back with what they did is a crock of #$%^& in my book...

I told them up front what $$ amount I had to work with and that's it. They both knew that coming in putting the deal together !
So I'll put it another way , either ;
A ) both of them were not trained properly OR ;
B ) turned into the typical dishonest used car salesman to get a sale...
I'm leaning towards B...

Now the Mrs is so sick and fed up with the whole thing she doesn't even want to hear the name of the MH outfit I was trying to work with ...

Not ALWAYS correct. Number one EVERYTHING is negotiable. I'm dealing with a dealer now and told him I want the OTD price and he asked "does that include tax reg etc." I said it includes everything so I don't pay a dime afterwards with anyone but you. He understood and quoted accordingly.

Dealing with ANYONE is smart to be clear, understandable and get it in writing. Stop all confusion.

I negotiated on a vehicle years ago and we agreed to terms, they pulled up the new vehicle, I unloaded my stuff from my vehicle and started the transfer into the new vehicle. We went in to sign the final paperwork, and I noticed the price was quite a bit different than what "I understood"

I said " I understood the price to be zyx" finance guy said " oh no the price is "abc" ...confused I said call in the sales guy. Sales guy said " oh no I didn't say that" . I said go get my car and switch all my stuff back - I'M OUTTA HERE.


Second time I went ti purchase a new Jeep for my daughter ( RED of course ). She did her selfie pics to send her friends, etc. I started to sign the paperwork and I asked what the finance rate was. He said at the time it was like 9%. I said WHAT? I can get 3% anywhere on the planet. Sales guy came back in with a yellow legal piece of paper full of scribble and said " LOOK you agreed to the finance rater right here"

At that point I had my daughter leave the room and get me some water. When she returned all the swearing and screaming on my part was finished and we left the dealership with no new RED Jeep. It was a long silent ride home for her and I.

What she learned that day was more valuable than anything college could teach her.

I remember years ago(20+) of hearing the stories of "welcome to Ca fee" for registering an out of state vehicle.
This RV Company is a factory direct sells to Customer , you would think that they what know what they are doing then ? But apparently not.

Yes I blame myself for part of the situation BUT I'm putting more blame on them for not forthcoming with actual facts on the registration part.
I feel like it was say whatever to make a sale and then let the chips fall where they did...

I will go online and make an appointment at the local DMV and see what they have to say about the Registration and taxes..

Then call and talk with the owner...

OP you need to know what the laws of that state are. As a CA resident you will be paying the taxes and registration when you bring the unit down to the dmv for vin verification. Some states require a dealer to collect the taxes and reg no matter what. In other cases the dealer can deliver out of their state and avoid this requirement. In your case figure out taxes and reg cost, deduct this from the total amount you want to pay, and make the offer. You are confusing OTD numbers here. All you should be paying is the price of the unit. Everything else is on you at the DMV office.

It would have been nice then for both salesguys I dealt with to mention it then .

The dealer cannot issue you a CA registration. They are doing all they can do, legally.

They can give you a temporary tag so you are good to drive home, but not a CA registration. You are asking them for the impossible.

Generally dealers are REQUIRED to collect sales tax (at least in TN they are.) When you take your bill of sale to get registration in CA, it will show the sales tax already paid. Then you will have to pay for CA inspection/registration.

Call whatever agency handles registration in CA, and verify the process, plus registration/inspection fees.

We've bought vehicles and multiple RV's out of state. Only once did one purchase pay the sales tax directly, because they were a reciprocal state. We usually figured it separately and pay out of pocket. One time, we had them figure in financing and they gave us a check back for amount at closing. They were off $$$ and had a delay since we had to send a separate check for difference.

This is because depending on the State and the County, each one has different DMV registration fees and rates. I don't know why you expect a dealer to make the call to your local office, when it's much easier for you as a residence to go to the County Courthouse or DMV and find out an estimated registration amount.
